Moorfields?

Postby Tom Gardner » Tue 03 May 2005 6:57 pm

Just a quick post.

I have heard this eye hospitals name been tossed about in this forum and I was wondering whether it is really as good as everyone says it is? Is it a private hospital or an NHS hospital? Could anyone tell me prices etc and who to see etc. I would really like as much info on this as possible and if anyone who goes on this forum goes there.

Many thanks Tom :)

Tom...

Moorfields is an NHS hospital in the London area that is famous because it is dedicated to eyes only and has been foremost in eye treatments and research.

Its not a question of "prices".. more of quality.

Because of its London location - it tends to be a leader in eye related research.

However, it also tends to be swamped by patients, so waiting times are long. There are many excellent NHS eye centres around the country which have the benfit of being local... and if they cannot sort you out they will refer you to Moorfields anyway.

Yes i go there as i moved to london and live about 4 miles away. I have to say it is very nice but as Lynn said the waiting isnt! I waited 11 months just to be seen for scleral lenses and only now they are being made, which leaves me another long wait for a fitting.

You need to be referred there, you cant just turn up, unless you are going to a and e. And as the problem i had, if you are registered with a consultant already in another hospital, you have to go back through the gp system and get referred to moorfields. They wont take a direct referral, which is what my hospiatl in wales tried to do when i moved.

I have been too many times now, mainly to a and e, and the queues are just like any other busy city hospital, so sometimes it is best sticking to what you know. The sclerals i would have had in wales, would have come from moorfields anyway which is why i wanted to be refered there. But if that wasnt the case i might not have been in such a hurry!!

Hope you work it out! Good luck, Claire X x X
