Alternatives to Miraflow....?

Postby Ian Joseph » Mon 21 Nov 2005 9:25 pm

All,

I've been using Asda Daily Contact Lens cleaner as an alternative to Miraflow (exactly the same active ingredients).

However, I've had problems sourcing the Asda stuff, tried 3 stores....what do others use with their RGP sclerals?

Any help appreciated.

I use boston advance. I have also used the boots cleaning & conditioning solutions for the same rgps which are also good but use boston as the cleaner has protein remover also.

Tesco has stopped stocking Miraflow, so I now buy it mailorder from Postoptics.

I have rgp sclerals.
I clean them in Fairy Liquid.
Or supermarket own brand washing up liquid.
Cheap, plentiful, I have to have some in the house anyway to do the washing up, does the job fine.
Because of the ready availability and comparative low price, there's no temptation to stint the stuff, so gets the lenses really clean due to using plenty.
Rinse it all off after, dry with tissue, Bob's yer uncle...

Good Lord ! Fairy Liquid ! I'll have a word with Ken Pullum when I see him next. 'Spose it too removes protein well  .

On the specific len cleaner option I did find the cost of Boston Advance soewhat shocking - £6 in Boots. If I recall correctly the Asda version of Miraflow was only about £2.50. I may give it a go but it's nice to hear some personal recomenadations.

Thanks for all advice.

Just thought Id add that the Fairy Liquid will NOT do anything to the germs/bacteria on the lens and in some instances can actually accelerate a potential eye infections........you will need to use some kind of disinfecting solution ..which the Boston Advance does........

If I remember correctly, the Fairy suggestion was made by Ken; and modern Fairies contain antibacterial agents anyway.

Please note that Fairy ought not to be used on lenses unless they are made 100% of glass, PMMA or RGP material. Anything soft, softperm etc will absorb too much of the detergent and slowly release it into your eye :(

Never heard that one before =-- I suspect for the reasons John gives.
I've only had one eye infection in the last umpteen years, and that was when i had pneumonia about 9 winters ago and was very poorly indeed. IN fact, the only time I remember ever having one before that - a real one, I mean, rather than a misdiagnosis of abrasion - was when I was about 6 and had measles.
this was about par for the course for people who had measles, as those of us over a certain age will remember.
The anti-measles vaccine came out a few months later; I was well pissed off to have missed it!
