Contacts wearing time

Postby withnall » Mon 20 Jun 2005 3:01 pm

Am a newbie to RGP's and have been wearing them for four weeks. The most time i have managed so far is about 10 hours.

How long do other contact wearers wear contacts for.

Wow. I suppose i am doing good. But i am still very aware of them in eyes and am not totally comfortable with them. Do you find this also.

Sometimes i ask " why me " with KC.

I would say go with what the optom says.

Until recently, I could go 12 - 14 hours per day for 5 days on the trot, but much reduced wear for the next two days.

To reduce bad eye days I stick to 8 hours which means going with one lens at a time. So far this has meant on the past four months only one bad eye day soon after wearing my lenses for 14 hours each outdoors. I do not have any hayfever symtoms, but pollen blown into my eye stuck on the lens causing me to have a reaction to it. Now I can only wear one lens for upto 8 hours.

Over wearing lenses is like going with little sleep. It eventually catches up with us and takes longer to recover.

My optomotrist told me 10 hours should be considerd the max and not the norm. So only do the 10 if I had to. The again alternating lenses, I get good sight for 16 hours without overdoing it, 20 is doable without over stressing each eye. As long as my eyes do not dry out in areas of high pollen count.

Stick to what you have achieved, there is nothing big in overwearing lenses and letting your eyes get sore!

Did that when I was 17, now mid 30's and my sight is even more important now.

Thanks

As a newbie to RGP's , it is all new to me. Getting quite good at putting them in and out. But i still find they have made a change to my lifestyle i.e. i use to do the gym twice weekly after work but now with the contacts, i am afraid to take them out in the gym so i go home and do it and do the gym at weekends. I suppose as time goes on and i become more use to them,i get bett at that stuff.

I noticed from your post that you have been a KCer for some time. How is your progression from when you were first diagnosed. So far i am mild to moderate. I am now 27 and was diagnosed when i was 21

I was diagnosed at 17 during a routine eye test. I say routine, it was to check I had not done any damage playing rugby afetr getting into a fight, two black eyes later I left the pitch unable to see due to the sewlling. Must of had KC before then, just a kick and a punch in the face did not help!

Had two grafts which is not common, both about 16 years old now and only recently gone to RGP's again due to an extremely rare change!

Taking lenses out in public places is not a proble, I always have a large towel to hand a spare set of solutions and stuff. Means if the toilets are not too clean, I can cover the sink with my towel so if I drop a lens, it lands on the towel and does not bounce to the floor or chip on the sink. Also reduces chances of lens disappearing down the plug hole. At the end of the day it comes to how confident you are at sorting your lenses out with people coming and going, some of which may want to talk to you.
