Scleral Lens - Full / Mini Scleral?

Postby jayuk » Mon 06 Jun 2005 7:44 pm

Hi

I noticed a post earlier on mini sclerals...

I wanted to ask those that have Sclerals why you have Mini Sclerals (if you have them)...what are the advantages? Do you get better visual acuity?........reason why I ask is that I dont get good acuity with mine in that I cant read small print like newspapers....and I have always used the full scleral.............any info appreciated

Hello jayuk

When I was fitted for my sclerals back in Jan 2003 I wasn't made aware that there was any such thing as a mini scleral. I assume this was due to the fact that the were felt not suitable for me however, to my knowledge I have only ever been tried with two types of lenses. One being and RGP and the other a scleral.

I have often wondered whether different hospitals and clinics prefer to use certain types of lenses or whether it is down to the good old 'post code lottery' again.

Quite a few seem to post about Rose-K lenses however to my knowledge they have not been offered to me.

I too, as jayuk would be interested to hear what types of lenses others have and how well they see with them.

Susan

Hi There

Postby Luciano Bastos » Mon 13 Jun 2005 5:36 am

I am new at the forum and as I am going with a colleague to London next month I want to share some experience with you and off course learn with you all.

We patented a new high perfomance RGP contact lens called Ultracone in Brazil which was developed studdying the principal concepts of the most known lenses in the ophthalmic and optometric practices, that was Soper, McGuire, Nipple Cone, Rose K, and many others. This concept is being developed by a study of more that 40 years, by my father which was a proeminent contact lens ophthalmologist and surgeon in Brazil. He died last year. I have helped him improving and developing special lenses for the irregular cornea for about 20 years.

What cautch my attention in this topic was the fact that sometimes this lens has to be manufactured to be a semi-scleral ou mini scleral lens, so this permits the lenses to cover very advanced cases of keratoconus.

I would like to ask you guys to help me find doctors in the UK which fits this sort of lens so we could exchange some information and knowledge. I expect to enchant any doctor which examinates their patients with the Ultracone designs, I will bring a complete set with me, including the mini-sclerals for the more advanced cases ou even the not-so-huge cases that needs more confort.

Could you suggest somes names wich I can contact? It would be a good idea if the specialist were those who modifies the lenses at their offices to personalize the fitting.

Thank you.

Luciana

I had heard of this lens but mainly from the KCenter board.

I have spoken to my Optom and he is more than happy to look at the lens design for my KC.

I have passed the info to you in a Peronal Message.

With regards to getting Lens Clinics to take this lens...you WILL have a up hill struggle if you go the NHS route due to red tape and the lengthy process for getting lens cleared.

Your best bet would be to approach Private Lens fitters in and around london. There are a number in London that do fit KC patients...
