Any suggestions?

Postby Green » Mon 03 Jan 2022 4:22 pm

Hi, my mum has very dry eyes, even worse since cataracts were done, and not helped by previous eyelid surgery which appears to have been botched (NHS), because they took too much skin, so her eyelids don't close properly hence corneal discomfort.
Ophthalmologist just ignored her concern, A&E nurses said to tape her eyelids shut at night, but this is very uncomfortable and stops her sleeping.
She uses Hylo-tear Forte, but I'm concerned that this is not being adequately addressed for her to have ongoing discomfort, I'm concerned about potential for corneal abrasion or ulceration.
Any self-help suggestions?

We are usually reluctant to suggest medication on the forum. However, as Hylo-Tear is available over the counter an alternative might be to try Hylo-Nite. It is a lubricant that stays on the eye overnight rather than running away. Hylo-Tear is one of the more liquid products in the range.

You really should not be fobbed off whether the doctor is private or NHS - their professional standards are the same. Can you accompany her to the next appointment?

Thank you I'll suggest that.
She has no further appts, Boots optometrist won't refer for another year at the next check if required. She has an abrasion now!

Her GP can refer her. With the greatest respect to the Boots Optom, they are not the best person to make that decision. Given there may be a wait, the sooner you get referred the better.

Previously mum was seen in the eye hosp A&E who suggested taping her eyelids down. They're not interested.
I'm offering mum a private optom appt
