hi!! been away for a while, my husbands grandfather sadly passed away a month ago, so i have been a little bit pre occupied. anyway get away from bad news ..well maybe i'm not so sure..
some of you may remember i had my first lens fitting about a month ago, and for the first two days everything was fine. well , now i just can't get them in. i have tried and tried and it wont work!!! my grandad in law died about a week after i first got my rgp's, so from then i didn't really bother with them. but for the last week or so i have been trying everyday, and it's just not happening people!!! can anyone give me any tips and advice on how to do it!!! also on tuesday , i woke up and i was blind for about 6 hours!! it was like someone was shining a torch in my eyes permanantley. has anyone else experienced this? and if so do you know what causes it? thanks in advance. MMxx

How are you trying to put them in? What method? I am assuming you talking about getting them in, in the first place?....there are a number of ways to put them in....as you will find out.....
Not sure what you mean about theshining light...I assume you mean light sensitivity?.....thats common and I do get that....in fact for the first hour or so I get this with my lens in...

I put my lenses in by soaking in wetting solution, poising them on the end of my index finger, bend my head over and place the lens onto the centre of the eye. Sometimes the lens just stays on the finger end but if it is wet enough it should just go into place.
I haven't had experience of being blinded for any period of time
My advice for what it's worth is to go straight back to your consultant.I don't want to sound alarmist but if your lenses aren't fitting properly for some reason they could cause some damage so don't mess about just see the professionals.

trying to put my lenses in really scares me. i did fine for the first few days. but recently i just can't do it. i drop them or they get stuck @ the top of my eyeball!! it hurts and it;s not fair!!! am going to see my consultant next week, so hopefully it will get sorted. thanks for advice guys!!

Try not too worry too much.
It is right that if the lenses are irritating or causing pain you should of course go straight back to your consultant/contact lens clinic.
However, I don't think that any of us with contact lenses took to them straight away or without any frustrations.
Personally when given RGP lenses I was not too bad, probably due to the fact that I had previously had soft lenses and was used to having to poke myself in the eye. It is not normal or natural to put bits of plastic hard or soft in your eye and certainly not to have to focus on your finger getting nearer and nearer with a little lens perched on the end that you are petrified of dropping, let alone putting on the surface of your eye. I did however still find it difficult to get the little horrors out.
Also if your uncorrected vision is poor, how do you see the damm things? I remember dropping one of mine in the kitchen and having to shout for my 5 year old to come and crawl on the floor for me. Yes it was tinted blue and he spotted it straight away however could I see it, of course not.
When 2 years ago I was moved onto scleral lenses as it was decided that RGP's were not fitting or correct the vision as needed, well what a performance.
To this day 2 years on I still have off days and if I drop a lens I can't see it despite it being really big.
I guess what I am saying is try not to worry, it is not easy. Try to remain calm and remember practise makes perfect.

i managed to get my right lens in this morning, but due to the fact that i had fogotten how uncomfortable thwy were, i was too scared to put my left one in!!! but the irritation has settled on my right eye now, so i think i may try and do left!!! i am such a big scardey cat!!!

how long did it take you to get used to putting in your lenses? i have never worn any kind of lenses before, and now i am getting concerned, cos i am struggling. i am waiting for an appointment @ the hospital, but what if i can never giet them in? i am findi ng it hard to see now, and i am only managing to type ,c os i know the layout of the keyboard!!! i have been reading through other posts (or should i say my 7 year old has been reading them to me)and i have heard about guide dogs, and blind registers and stuff, and now i am scarred!! i know yopu lot are sufferers too, but it really does help to get advice and support from here. i need to get my lenses in and i can't!!!!

Putting lenses in comes with time, easier said than done. Six months on, I still need to have atleast ten minutes between putting lenses in. Recently it has been longer.
I only wore lenses 20 years ago for about 12 months before I had my grafts. Now I need them again and it has taken longer to get used to them, I did however have a reallt patient nurse that spent the best part of a day helping me perfect getting the lenses in and out.
Give the hospital a chance first and get the advice you want wit putting lenses in and out. Easier said than done, but leave the what if thoughts until after the appointment.
I find I can only put my lenses in if the surface I am stood or sat at is at a specific height and that I have a specific type of mirror. This seems to have the affect that when I look at the centre of the mirror, my eyes are in the right position to receive the lens. Then it is just a case of holding the lids open long enough to get the lens near. When I was getting used to my lenses, after I had worn them for the requierd time, I would practice holding one eye open with my fingers and looking through the other.
Might be worth a try.

thanks. it's the thopught of putting thm in that terrifies me. i know it's gonna hurt and thinking about poking something into my eyes just puts me off!! when i get the lenses nearer and nearer, i just stop and think, i cant do it. it sounds daft , and i know it doent hurt that much, but when you're expecting pain or irritation it's harder to accept than something randomly being inserted into your eye!!!

This is so you get used to your finger being extremely close to your eyeball. As I soon realised, if you're gentle, which you have to be to put these things in, then your eye will soon realise that it doesn't hurt. It can take some convincing, but you'll get there!
