Reoccurring Keratoconus

Postby Denham » Thu 11 Aug 2016 4:00 pm

Hi,

This is my first post although I have been a member for several years. I had a graft in my left eye nearly 20 years ago. I have had good vision with wearing glasses however my prescription does change each year when I have my annual sight test. I have Keratoconus in my right eye which seem to be pretty stable.
I had a sight test in June which was a couple of earlier than usual as I noticed my sight seemed worse in my left eye. The optician said that my prescription in that eye had changed drastically and that she was referring me to hospital as there was something wrong with my cornea but she didn't know what.
I had my appointment yesterday, during the appointment my eye was scanned and examined. The specailist said that my graft was ok, however I had reoccurring Keratoconus in the piece of my cornea which was left. He said that there are two options. The first was trying a toric lens and the second was having an operation to strengthen the my cornea by ctting a wedge out of it. At the same time as having this done he would also replace my lens as I have a cataract forming. He suggested trying the lens first although he said I will eventually need the operation.
I was wondering if anyone has had any experience of this procedure.

If you put 'wedge resection' into the search on this forum, you'll find some posts from a few years ago, mainly from one user and I don't think she's posted for a while. As far as I know, it is pretty rare for KC to recur after a graft, though it's happened to me too at the base of both my transplants. In my case, one failed totally a couple of years ago so I had to have a regraft in that eye and the procedure you describe wasn't an option.
Maybe another forum user will come along who has had experience of it. Meanwhile, all the best with trying the toric lens.
