Wearing Scleral for the 1st time

Postby Lbradley » Sat 23 Apr 2016 11:01 am

Hi All

I've been wearing lens since about 1994 when I was diagnosed with KC.
I've recently been fitted with a scleral lens for 1 eye & put it for the 1st time this morning.
Although its not uncomfortable it feels weird.
The vision is ok, I just feel drunk. Is this normal? I can feel it in my eye but I guess I'll just get used to that.
I just feel a bit dizzy.

Thanks in advance

I've not worn scleral lenses myself but I have met several people who do.

As they are so much bigger than corneal RGPs I would expect them to feel very different, and hopefully more comfortable, if you've had comfort issues with RGPs. I don't think feeling drunk is normal, however if you haven't worn a lens in that eye for a while it could be you are just getting used to seeing with both eyes again.

How are things now after a few days wear?

Lia

Hi Lia

Thanks for the reply. The vision in it isn't as good as my usual RGP. I wore it all day yesterday at work & comfort wise it was pretty good. However, when I took it out last night the blood vessels in my eye became very swollen. There was also a bad imprint on my eye where its been sitting. I've contacted my specialist today & have been told not to wear it as it's likely to be causing edema. Try again I guess!

I know what you mean by feeling drunk. I think you can put it down to the extra weight of the lens on the eye, as you move the eye tends to lag behind a bit and that gives you the same effect as having a few too many.

I'm sorry to hear that this lens hasn't worked for you. Contact lens fitting can be so frustrating at times. Hopefully they'll find a better lens for you next time.

Thanks Pat, that's useful advice & interesting to know. Do you think it would help if I had a scleral in both eyes?

I've had the drunk/nausea sensation with lenses/glasses where the prescription doesn't work, which you know if the brain hasn't adjusted within 1-2 weeks

Hi I wore a scleral lens in my left eye for years with a soft perm in my right. Then I had a mini scleral. To be honest it was mostly fine once I got used to it. Then when my sight in the left eye needed adjusting the scleral was too heavy.
I had cataract surgery 5 years ago without a lens implant and moved onto a profile 14.
I need more surgery to insert a lens and anticipate being fitted with a profile 17 after this.
Basically sclerals are fine once you get used to them the problems come if your power needed means the front of the lens is heavy so it drops in the eye.
The biggest bonus for me was the dust never got under it.
