BBC Radio Interview

Postby Eisa » Mon 01 Sep 2014 2:16 pm

I've been "officially" waiting for a corneal graft since December 2013 and hope to get it sorted this side of December 2014. Very frustrating as I can now only wear lenses for a few hours or sometimes just a few minutes at a time. And often (as right now) just one lens at a time. But when I can wear both lenses I can see just fine. The rest of the time it's Talk Sport ... sort of Jekyll and Hyde existence!
I've spent the summer organising racing at my local sailing club (I can't sail as I can't tolerate the wind/sun). I was recently interviewed by my local BBC radio station on the subject of ongoing seawater/ sewage pollution by Southern Water. After we'd finished I started chatting to the journalist and told him about my frustration in waiting so long for a corneal graft.
I've since been invited by BBC Radio Solent for a short interview this Friday 5th September on the subject of tissue donation.
Notwithstanding why I've waited so long - having spoken to the NHS BT (Blood and Transplant) people last week, the "official" line on graft waiting times is 3 months - this is a good opportunity (too good to miss perhaps) of raising the profile of keratoconus and also the maybe delicate subject of eye tissue donation - especially at breakfast time when this is going out|
Of course I've no direct experience (yet) of a corneal graft. If anyone reading this would like to share some tips or help me work out what I want to get over in maybe 90 seconds - please drop me a message or give me a call at home 02392 863143.
Thanks!
Bob Evans

PS for anyone not already aware - BBC3 tonight Monday 1st September @ 9pm episode 1 of 2 on the work of NHS BT documentary - including I believe corneal transplants.

Great interview Bob and thank you for raising awareness of the need for corneal donors. I have had two transplants and am so grateful for them everyday.

Wishing you all the best with your transplant
