Hi Ade...Sclerals are contact lenses...they are a great option for many and have many advantages like comfort and vision...

There are successes in "newer" soft lenses for KC as well...

These are all options you can talk to your consultant about...

I think you have some excellent options...so keep your head up!!

Ade

Look at the Hole page of the KC site, then under the section 'About Keratoconus' and then 'Contact Lenses for Keratoconus'.

You may also find useful looking in the section 'Talk to Someone' and then 'Links to other Keratoconus Sites' - 'Innovative Sclerals Ltd'

Hope this may be of use to you, if you haven't already come across it by yourself.

Susan :)

Update from hospital

Postby ade waller » Fri 29 Apr 2005 9:39 pm

Hello everyone

Went for a check up at the hospital this week.

My surgan feels that i need to see the contact lens specilist as my vision since my intacts has improved in its shape but not its vision. Before they choose wether or not to give me a graft they want to see if a contact lens can improve my vision since the intact has been but put in.

feels like i am back to sqaure one but i am going along with there jugment.

Does anyone know if hospitals can get hold of lenses which are for KC as i discussed with my surgan that i had not been able to wear contact lenses due to having dry eyes.

Oh well back to the drawing bord for me.

My contact lens assesment is a week next monday.

Adrian

Ade...

yes hospitals can get KC lenses. Although the intacs did not improve your vision as you hoped... they have improved the general shape which may well mean contact lenses will be more successful. In fact you may not need dedicated KC lenses at all now...

You need to mention to the clinic about your dry eyes and they will make an assessment as to whether the lenses will work. If the general shape is much better then the dry eyes may not be such a problem...

I have been to hospital today and have had a really bad day.

i was asked to see the contact lens specialist who really got me down. i had seen him before my op several times and was unable to find a compftable lens. he said straight away that he did not hold much hope in fitting a lens for me .

He looked at my eye then mumbled something about the shape of my eye which i had the intact in. he told me that the shape was giong to be difficult to put a lens over. i thought the shape had improved but he did not seem to think so.

he then went to get the surgan who done my intacts between them they were talking about the intacts working to well they said that the intacts had made the shape of my eye to flat which is why it would be difficult to fit a contact lens. the person who was going to fit the lens also said that my eye had a bolge???. i was so confused by this time i asked the surgan what he felt my chances were to have a contact lens fitted the other guy replied with your history of dry eye and the shape he would find it difficult but would give it ago in two weeks time as he had run out of time. again i asked him what he ment he told me that he had hoped to do a scan on the whole of my eye the one were they take a colored scan of the eye. but the machine was not working. i left the room very confused.

i went back into the hospital as i was not happy that i seemed to be getting no answers. the surgan said that the intacts had not formed the way they had hoped.

he removed my stich from my operatrion and appogised that he did not have any time to talk to me further as he was only allowed 5 minutes per patient.

oh well another 2 weeks. this is been going on for at least 6 years and no change yet i wish i could afford to go private.

Lyn i asked the contact lens specilist about the lences he fitted he told me he had tried rgp with me but had no success. he now thinks hard lenses are the way forward???????

Allowed 5 mins per patient!!!.....OK! now that gets me mad!

Anyway, in all honesty from what you have said I wuld get a second opinion from another CL fitter......as this person doesnt come across as having decent bed side manners, explore other lenses, and actually want to help you......I would be really surprised if any of the other lenses availble will not improve your correct vision....frm what you have said

update from hospital

Postby ade waller » Mon 23 May 2005 9:53 pm

Hi Just to let everyone know the latest sarger in my life.

i have been to the hospital today and i am having to have a another operation on my right eye to remove one of the intacts the hospital put in.

apparently the stigmatisim in my eye is worse than before my op. The contact lens specialist feels that because of the shape also he would not be able to fit a lens comftably.

so the surgan has descided to remove one of the intacts to see if he can get a better shape to be able to fit a contact lens.

:x

Im also down for the graft if this does not work oh well whats another 6 months ive only been waiting 8 years to have some sort of sight in my right eye.

sorry for the bad news again one day i wil write something posotive on this sight.

Hi Ade,
sorry to hear about your problems, you really seem to be having a tough time of it. I agree with jayuk about getting a second opinion as I am sure that there must be a lens out there for you. Surely all the options must be looked at before anymore surgery. Good luck.
