Thank you Sandy
Would have never thought it but I'm willing to try anything so I'll give it a go.
Thank you

Lynn White - can you offer any advice on this one?
Hello all
Just posting as I am trying to build up my lens wearing time again (sclerals) and am seeming to be having problems with my right lens on a regular basis with regard to 'sticky floaty bits' after a couple of hours wear.
I have just ordered some Systane drops from the post optics website and I will ask again at the hospital when I next visit at the end of the month if they have any ideas however, last time I asked they didn't seem to say much.
Maybe Lynn can advise or Ian has some news from his hospital visit.
thanks
Susan

Well...
basically this is not pus as such - it is "just" an excess of mucus caused by irritation. "Real" pus is in response to a bacterial infection which has been ruled out by your specialist. If you tend to get it in the evening, odds are that when you are looked at by the hospital, nothing shows up!
Interestingly enough.... I have been having the same problem with my own right lens - we optoms are not immune to these things either!! In my case I think I have tracked it down to the solution I was using. Why does it only affect one eye? because you are different from one side to the other...and also it may be a mechanical irritation - ie the lens is "rubbing".
Ian.. the drops he recommends ARE Systane which I have been also strongly recommending here on other posts... and people have been using and finding great relief from it.
Susan - it may be your scleral is touching down slightly which causes the irritation which ends up producing mucus. You may well find the systane helps because it maintains the tear film better than other solutions. It also helps the eye to heal small abrasions, which is what usually causes the mucus to form.
Ian - how long had you been wearing the lenses when your consultant looked at your eye last?

MUCUS/PIGGY BACK LENSES
To Lynn thanks for comments.
Susan
Unfortunately things haven't improved, some nights the right eye is worse. I have been using Systane but to no avail. A couple of nights a go I had mucus not only in the centre of eye but some in corner of my right eye & getting it out, well. It materialises after aprox 9pm (why that time I haven't a clue) & if out socialing it can cause attention if friends see it & no matter how many times I clear my eye it soon appears again.
To Lynn
I wear a soft lens on a daily basis & wear a hard lens on top, I have had these since August 2004. I'm still using the Systane as directed even though nothing has changed, I'm due to speak to my consultant on 21/4/05, one thing he did suggest was that my tear duck maybe faulty but he wanted to test other things out before considering that option.
Any advice or suggestions are still greatly received
Thank you
Ian

Sorry it's not getting any better.
I got the drops on Monday and have tried them and so far it's probably too soon to say. Things seem a little better with the right lens but not clear as yet.
Today I put the lens (scleral) in at about 9:15 and at 3 pm it was starting to go cloudy. I took it out and it had the start or a mucky film forming on it rinsed it off and put it back. Off to see the GP at 4.10pm and back at home by 4.30pm sticky bits coming back.
I too am at the contact lens clinic later in the month (28th April) and will see if they have any ideas. Maybe by then the drops will have helped a lot more?
The only other thing I was once told by the clinic was something about protein build up. I expect you clean all your lenses with a protein remover ? At first I did not as it was never mentioned by the hospital however, since then I am now under the impression that it is best to do so.
Maybe others can give their advice and experience on this ?
best wishes

Hi Susan
I don't actually use protein remover & it's something that hasn't been mentioned. The only liquids I use are Quattro which apparently is a sterilising & cleaning solution.

Quattro Multifunctional Solution ? is that made by Abatron Limited ?
I was originally started on Baush & Laumb Elite, which now is packaged as Boston Advance. Both are two solutions one cleaning and one conditioning.
When I was starting to have probs with dry eyes I tried to store my sclerals wet for a time, most people clean and store them dry and it works fine for them, much different to looking after RGP or soft lenses, no waiting for disinfection with sclerals stored dry.
Anyway my eyes were dry and so we contacted the makers of the lenses Innovative Sclerals and they put me on to Quattro as it had a larger lens case in an attempt for me to try wet storage.
It seemed ok at first and the hospital were ok about it however, after recent events, stress with work and poor lens wear times, I have gone back to Boston and things seem to be just as good.
As for a protein remover Abatron make one called Amiclair which was recommended to me by the hospital and as I can't buy it locally I have been buying from the manufacturer.
Maybe your specialist will suggest a change of solutions used ? With the Boston you would clean with the cleaning solution and then disinfect in the comfort solution so not too different to the Quattro.
See what they say it may be worth a go.
If my understanding was right with protein build up and dirt on lenses etc this whilst not always visible can cause lenses to b uncomfortable when worn and maybe causes us some of our problems???
best wishes
