1Year On Since Corneal Graft

Postby djs1972 » Fri 18 Jan 2013 6:12 pm

Hi all,

Well it's a year since I had the graft done in my right eye, all seems ok, vision is very slowly improving, and I get no pain or discomfort.
Still got 14 stitches to come out over time, but the longer they stay, the better I'm told.

Happy Graft Anniversary djs !

I wish our Forum software had some whizzy feature which we could use to celebrate great cornea graft outcomes. Instead I'll have to settle for some humble animated GIFs...

Take care, hope things keep going as well as they have so far.

Chris

Been hopping in and out of the forum, keeping an eye on the progress of Keratoconus treatment shall we say, and now im at a crossroads........

18 months on, and although I have had no pain or discomfort, im free of all stitches, im at a loss as to what to do next, had a checkup today, and I have a severe stigmatism in the post op eye, and keratoconus has formed again on the grafted cornea. There was always a chance that things could happen, and I was happy to accept the risks of surgery but im gutted, as right now my vision has gradually got worse over the last 3 months, im now at a point where its worse than before the operation.

Current thinking is give Contact Lenses a try, but the hospital optometrist had trouble getting the balance right and referred me back to the consultant, wait 6 months and maybe go back under the knife.

Today is probably not the best day to search for 2nd opinions, but im not too sure I can put up with the constant blurred vision, ocular migraines (really bizarre) when they happen and the risk of further change in my left eye (Keratoconus slowly getting worse). I know things could be much worse, but I just hoped I would be able to see better than before the op after all this time.

anyway, stay well people.

KC coming back in a grafted eye is supposed to be very rare, but you're the second person reporting this here in just a few weeks. It's so hard, when you've waited so long to get better vision, to have this knock back. A second opinion sounds like a really good idea before you make any decisions about what to do next.
All the best
Anne

Hi
I wish You lots of strength mate, don't let this KC win.
Don't know what kind of graft You had but surprised me why they didn't note that the eye go worse when You been on control visit?
Know people who all 16 months up to stitches take off had poor vision and were not happy with effects, expected bit more..then stitches of and after 2-4 weeks vision getting better. So looks like it works both ways.
On one of my control visit after graft doctor told me "even my new cornea starting go worse, or my vision get much worse when stitches will off they have several option to make my eye better without next graft because new cornea have full thickness that give them more ways to sort it.
Optometrist is one of the most developing part of medicine so I have hope that someday they find out how stop it.

What is your concern? We are all different and one person's good experience is not a predictor of good experiences for all any more than one person's bad experience is not a predictor of bad experiences for all.

That said, I have had one full thickness graft and one DALK. Of the two eyes, the full thickness gives me better vision.

Every good wish

Andrew

I had another visit today to the Optometry Department at the hospital, and my vision has changed again! The contact lens that was fitted and made for me 3 weeks ago was practically useless once in my right eye, vision was very blurred and the fit was so bad it lifted with each blink and caused an arc of white light every time I I did so.

I now have to wait another month as its got to go back for modification, and the whole department are on holiday! To say I'm not happy or impressed is an understatement, and first thing Monday I'm going to make some calls, as this just shouldn't be happening as far as I'm concerned.

I've asked what my options are, and they seem fairly limited, due to the Keratoconus coming back in the grafted cornea, the other issue I have is that my left eye is now sore all the time due to contact wear, which is how the right went downhill 2 years ago.
