Interesting article about KC and "ring treatment" being carried out at the Center for Sight at East Grinstead Hospital West Sussex.
What do you think?????

I thought the article was most interesting. Have any of you had this 'ring treatment' and what do the others think. Any specialists out there please? This could be the way forward for some of us.....
i posted about Ferrara Rings previously....about only 10 eyes have been done in the uk so far...two had to be taken out (due to it migrating/and no benifits) one had an infection (but cleared up)...you will not get your sight back as you had it before you had KC...you will still have glare problems in the night...but you could avoid a transplant...
....its still having something in your eye....and recovery is long....but you can get some use out of your eye if you are intolerant to contact lenses....
It does streach an already thin cornea....its like streaching a rubber band, thus making the cornea even more thinner...Light aversion and fluctuating vision can also be expected after surgery.
Anyway it has good advantages and disadvantages...like with the other treatments...but it could be benifical to contact lens intolerant people and they are the people who this is being tried for..
There is evidence that your corneal thickness can increase months after the sugery and that the rings may stop the progression of the illness.
Ferrara Ring is also better at correcting KC than Intacs....and also X-Linking(wich is a none surgical treatment) is also in the pipe-line (It is supposed to stop KC from progressing!)
Also I have heard of Ferrara Ring done after a cornea graft to improve vision (not here but where Ferrara Rings was developed...which is brasil)...which I think is great news!
BTW...I know this through talking to the right people and patients
They have international centers and the are called "The centre for sight"...theres a Center up the road for us in sussex like sandi says.
