Cataract and lens implant

Postby GrandPaClanger » Fri 07 Dec 2012 7:16 am

Well a visit to the hospital yesterday reveals I am developing at cataract because of the steroids used after the graft. So waiting for a date to remove all the remaing sutures. Once things have settled down they do the cataract op and insert a toric lens to correct any astigmatism. Consultant seems to think its all good news and keen to get on with it. Anyone had it done. :D

Hello Ian. Have a look at my post "Help, please!". I have now decided (or I should say my wife has decided!) that I am going to have the toric lenses. I am having it done at the Optegra Solent Eye Clinic by Mr David Anderson. I'm still a bit uncertain about the toric lenses because I've read nothing but good things about monofocals whereas I've read mixed reviews on "premium" lenses. I've also worn glasses for over 40 years so having to wear them for astigmatism would be no problem for me particularly as I will have to have reading glasses in any case. However, I have heard nothing but good reports about the hospital and the consultant and although Mr Anderson put no pressure at all on me to get the toric lenses he did say that they would reduce my astigmatism considerably and I would not need glasses for anything other than reading. I'm having one eye done on Jan 21st and the other on Feb 14th so I'll let you know how I get on.

Hi Russell
Thanks for the post hope all goes well in the new year. I read your post a while back but it was an interesting read again in light of my recent visit to the hospital. Are you still having to have it done privately ? It wasn't something that the consultant mentioned in clinic so I assumed it would be done on the NHS. Maybe it's a conversation he has planned when we see what I am left with after the sutures are removed

All the best

Ian

Hi Ian,
I'm having it done privately via AXA Health Insurance that I have at work. However they don't cover the toric lens which I need to correct my sever astigmatism so I'm paying for the difference myself. I could have had it done via the NHS - and would have if I hadn't got insurance as part of my work package - but I could not have then had the toric lens. I must say that I'm not looking forward to any of it but am praying I don't have to follow it up with a cornea op! Hope everything goes well for you.
Regards,
Russell

I have been reading a lot about cataract and cataract surgery and found there is nothing huge to get anxious for especially if you got a great surgeon that will help you get ready with the operation. Good luck to you and hope you get well soon. :)

Hi Russel
Well things have happened quicker than expected. They are taking the sutures out a week today. All done under a local. As I will have the surgeons undivided attention for half an hour I'll ask the question :D

All the best

I had exactly that issue: cataracts in both eyes following steroid use after grafts.

The upside is that they are very good at Cataract operations: I had an implant in my right eye and they continue to monitor the cataract in my left. I have had excellent vision since the cataract surgery and have absolutely no regrets about having it done.
