Hi All,

I got my date for my cornea transplant which is 20th November, I am abit nervous and excited as I have wanted this done for ages. Can any of you give me some advise on the before and after surgery? I have read on the internet on some sites that after the operation I will have to wear a pad and my vision will be burred for 3 to 6 months after the surgery. I have my pre op appointment on Tuesday 13th November, I guess I can ask all these question then.

All the very best for 20th! There's nothing you need to do pre-op, except make a list of all the questions you want answered at your pre-op appointment. Post op, yes, you will be given a shield to wear at night over the grafted eye. That's to stop you accidentally rubbing your eye in your sleep. You'll also be given several eye drops (anti infection, anti rejection) and it's important to use those as instructed. How soon you'll notice a change in vision varies a lot between different people. Some see a difference within a month or two, for others it can take up to a year. But if the eye is at the stage of needing a graft, I imagine you're not getting much vision out of it now and are depending on the vision in your better eye, so you shouldn't be any worse off in the months post graft.
I hope that helps - do come back with more questions if you have them.
Anne

Times have changed! As I said earlier, I got a phone call from the hospital and they said 'you have to be here in one hour'! How do they know they will have the material on the 20th?

I can't really give you any advice, other than to say that for me it wasn't too painful (irritating stiches as I recall) and I haven't had any problems at all since the operation. I hope your goes as well!

I was telling a workmate the other day about my newly found information from this site that I might be able to wear contact lenses. He said 'well, why couldn't you wear them before'? I answered, 'well, it's because I had Keratocunus'....and at that point he jumped in with, 'what, you had Kerry Katona!!' :P
