Hope it goes well Jonny with the lenses... I am assuming you have spoken to your consultant and agreed this is the way forward? I really struggled with my sclerals but then that was approx 20 years ago and my KC was already well advanced & treatments/lens options were much more limited.. I really wish I had stuck at it - I found it easier to whimp out and find excuses. In honesty? In retrospect I really wish I had fought the battle as here I am now having had a cornea graft and complications and I will never know whether the outcome may have been different if I had really really tried with the lenses. After all.... How natural is it to put dustbin lids in your eyes & look like you are either a red eyed vampire, hung over or just plain crying? Without sounding too old and reminiscent, not sticking with lenses has been much sorer in the long term!!!
Hang on in there & as long as it is medically assessed as the best way forward then for once do as your G/F tells you!

The biggest problem that I've been faced with is getting used to the damn rigid lenses... I was given them 2 years ago and each time I was putting them in I'd find that the only thing I could do was to sit there as the constant stream of tears and discomfort prevented me from doing anything else -- in the end I threw in the towel and subsequently threw the contact lenses to the side and just went on about my life without any lens at all.

I'm such a piggy back advocate I know everyone is different but was amazing for me. Have they/you tried that? Also you need to be unbelievably anal with cleaning RGPs compared to softs, learnt hard way (rubbing them lots rather than a wee squirt and rub).
