Thanks very much for the feedback Rosie. It must have been devastating when you couldn't drive.
I couldn't drive until I was 40 and then went to Softperm lenses not realising my long wearing time was going to give me problems later. So for my 40th I got a driving licence and now nearly 10 years on I am very nervous about the potential loss of freedom.

Hi all, 2 questions

1: Are the new forums up and running properly ?

2: Has anyone here ever claimed DLA for their KC problems and if so what did you list as problems you had that would enable you to get DLA. Did it affect your right to drive at all. Any tips etc ?

Many thanks

Dave

Hi Dave,

No, the new forums are still only there for people (including me!) to play with at the moment. It's taking slightly longer than anticpated to get the code all together so that the forums can be participated in by email.

An announcement will be made before changeover day.

hi
to all who have had a cornea graph i want to ask about stitches being removed.
as most will know i had op in august 2002. as it stands at the moment i have 13 stitches left to be taken out. i have had about 8 removed already. last one to be removed was on monday as it was poking back through eye.
my surgeon wants me to have them all removed in one go, but i am not happy about going into theatre to have them all removed which is what he wanted to do. the look on my face said it all really. he is ok about taking stitches out one by one which will be about once a month . other doctor i saw said you might not have to go in to theatre but they will need to sedate me as im so jumpy and nervous !

has anyone had alot of stitches out in one go and how was it done? i do panic alot and very nervous which is why surgeon feels it would be safer for him and me to go into theatre.
also i am now told that my right eye is now illegal for driving so i am replying on op eye. i am still 100% against having right eye done .
can anyone advise what would be my best option as to having stitches out ...one by one ( which i feel happier with ) or be sedated and have the lot removed ?
any help i would be gratful for .
please email me on starlight7723366@aol.com or on message board.
thanx
sarah

Hi Sarah,

I've got 13 stitches left too. I've only had 3 out though, on 2 occassions. Mine are individual stitches, but I know some surgeons use a running stitch - which would probably make a difference. You didn't say which you had.

Both times I was told that they try not to mess with them unless there is a problem (broken, too tight/loose etc.) as each time there is a risk of kicking off a rejection episode and/or an infection. So I guess by having them all out in one go you'll be reducing that risk, especially as I remember you saying how unnerving you find having them done one by one. Have you asked if they really all need removing right now? Why one a month if they aren't causing a problem?

Also been told that the vision should improve each time they remove stitches, (once it has settled down) so I imagine getting it done at once would make a massive difference. Have you noticed an improvement? I take it you aren't too happy with the results so far.

Just wondering, is it the thought of going into theatre that you are dubious about? Or is it the thought of having all the stitches done at once? I've got to admit, having 1 or 2 removed at once is OK, but I'm not sure I'd like to sit there and not blink for all of them at once!

Guess only you can decide.

Rob.

Hi Dave.

I was told to apply for DLA when I was on the waiting list for my graft. I got the lowest rate for one component and after making a bit of a fuss got the lowest rate mobility component. I explained to them in detail the sort of problems I encounter in everyday life - shaving, making a cup of tea, crossing the road etc, (filling in forms!). I still wore a lens in my left eye but was finding it increasingly difficult to wear it for any reasonable length of time, and couldn't rely on it on a daily basis. (I still don't wear it now because of tolerence problems).

You mentioned about your right to drive being affected. To be honest, if your vision is good enough that you can still (legally) drive, I doubt you'd qualify. I was told not to drive a long time before I was put on the waiting list for the graft, and I barely qualified!

But you have nothing to lose by applying, the worst they can do is say no.

Rob.

When I hat the stitches taken out of my Right eye a few months ago, I didn't need to go into theatre - in fact they did it at very short notice and jused local anathetic drops. There was a dull ache once the drops wore off, but it was nothing a couple of ibuprofen, a dark room and a couple of hours sleep didn't fix!
Whatever yo udecide, good luck!

I had my left eye grafted in 98, the hospital which we shall leave unnamed made a mess of it and left me with a
-21 stigmatisum, so i am now in the same boat as before in that i can not get a lens that will sit on my eye.

I have an appointment to go to ST Pauls in Liverpool where they are going to make a small slit on each side of the eye and pull the cornea flat and then put a stich in it to hold it, they hope this will enable me to wear a lens.

Has anyone ever had this done? if so what was the resut?

many thanks

Kev
