Inserting Scleral Lenses

Postby Emma J » Sun 14 Feb 2010 2:58 pm

I would be grateful for any tips/hints people have for putting in Scleral lenses. My vision is good with them in, but have only managed to get them in properly twice since I got sclerals a few months ago (currently wearing piggy backs).

The bit I struggle with is keeping the liquid in, no matter how hard I try I spill some of it and then get air bubbles!!! Keeping my current lens in one eye whilst I put the scleral in the other has helped because I can actually see what I am doing  but I still have some spillage!

Any advice would be gratefully received, need to master them before I am back at Moorfields in April.

Thanks
Emma

Emma, here is the method that worked for me.

First, FILL the lens with saline. Hold the lens so that it remains brim full of saline.

Now look straight down into the lens. You will see the little 'button' that is the part that has the optical value. This ought to be on the nose side of the mid point of the lens.

Lower your eye into the little pool of saline. With your other hand (the one not holding the lens) draw down your lower eyelid and tuck the lens under it. Now draw up your upper eyelid and tuck the lens in there, too. Blink. The lens is in place; congratulations.
:D

Hi Emma

I do basicly the same as andrew except i tuck the full scleral under my top eyelid without touching it with my fingers, then i draw down the lower eyelid and tuck the lens under.

Good Luck
