My Post Graft Update

Well it has been three months since I underwent a full thickness graft and I have had no complications so far. The vision continues to fluctuate day by day. I suppose the greatest moment was when I looked up at the night sky and was once again able to see our beautiful milky way galaxy in all its glory I can now read street signs too, which is awesome. It seems that when I turn my head at different angles the vision improves; must be related to certain parts of the cornea settling quicker than the rest.

One question to all you post graft people, when is it acceptable to go swimming again? I swin at a local HEATED pool, so am a little concerned about microorganisms infecting the eye, but I know my epithelial tissue is now fully healed and the cornea is now sealed so the risks would be quite low. What have your surgeons told you about this issue??

Anyway, I am extremely happy with my corneal transplant and hope any of you facing it has as much success as I have had, or better yet, more! I really do think it is worth the risk, if you have a faulty part that is utterly useless, replace it. Just make sure you have a decent surgeon.

Vision changing for the better when you tilt your head is astigmatism. I had that as eye recovered and it was really having individual stitches which allowed the astigmatism to be controlled during the healing process.

Regarding swimming it was thre months post op for me but that was 20 years ago and I know that opthalmologists are very wary now of letting us return to such activities. It would be best to discuss with your consultant and if you do go swimming it would be prudent to wear a good quality swim mask just to offer some extra protection.

I was told that I could never go swimming again, for the rest of my life.
Needless to say, that is but one of the factors that make the mess of a distastrous graft op all the worst.
Further needless to say, I fully intend to ignore the instruction!
