John
I am glad to see that your original question seems to have been resolved, but for the record I have just had a new lens prescribed and dispensed by Gartnavel Hospital in Glasgow and there were no additional bits of formality that needed to be observed.
Every time I see my surgeon at one of his clinics I do have a 'refraction', but this is just so that he can know how stable my vision is.
At the moment I have glasses for one eye and a lens for the other (not as weird as you might think; from the outside I look like a person with ordinary glasses, but one of the lenses has no optical value and behind it I wear a contact lens). The optician who looks after my specs is endlessly patient with me; and it was she who first noticed that my son also had keratoconus.
All the best
Andrew
