Corneal abrasion

Postby JonnyHudd » Tue 12 Aug 2008 9:53 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm a frequent visitor but have'nt needed to post up to now. I'm just interested if this has happened to anyome else. My eyes have been stable for the last 5 years (i'm now 28) but in the last 3 weeks my right eye lens has become very uncomfortable. To cut a long story short, I had an appointment today and the doctor told me I have a corneal abrasion on my right eye, although with both lenses in I still have 20/20 vision. She told me to keep my lenses out for a week, then come back next week and they will check again to see if it has cleared up. She says that my eye may not have neccessarily 'changed' but they will know better next week when they can assess the fit of the right lens more accurately.

Has this happened to anyone? Is is a common occurence in contact kens wearers? I am worried in case my eyes have started to change again, but my doctor was quite optimistic about things today.

Thanks,

Jonny.

Unfortunately, this isn't uncommon for people with KC - it's because we are so dependent on our lenses and tend to wear them a lot.
If it is only your right eye affected, you could still wear the left one and go about one-eyed...... if the resultant vision being sharp in one eye and blurry in the other isn't ore confusing than the benefit of seeing well with one of them.
I've been wearing one lens at a time for years and got used to it.
Do be aware if you try this, though, that it can be uch harder to judge distances with only one eye. working fully.

Jonny

Good to we you posting, now. Welcome!

I am afraid that there is a reason why they tell us to limit out contact lens wear time; and you just found it!

All the best

Andrew

Welcome Jonny
Yes, abrasions are common. Mine have usually been caused by a bit of dust getting underneath the lens and have quickly healed up after leaving the lens out for a few days, leaving no after effects. Hope that proves the case for you too.

The other cause can be over wearing lenses.

I have not had this but it was one of the things eye casualty were lookang for when i had to visit them on Tuesday 12th.

For me it has been suggested that me wearing lenses 6 days per week rather than five and a couple times per week weaing beyond 12 hours has been the cause.

You might have to reconsider your work life balance, something I am starting to work on.

Regards

Gareth

Hi everyone,

thanks for your messages. I had my appointment this afternoon and thankfully evrything has cleared, and with my contacts back in my vision is 20/20 and the fit is good. It was great having my contacts back in as I have been walking around in a haze for the last week!

Hopefully the abrasion will not reappear and things will settle again!

Jonny.
