Diagnosed today.

Postby Tittch » Tue 15 Jul 2008 8:55 pm

Hi Folks

I've had a diagnosis of Keratoconus confirmed today. I'm a 41 year old woman with KC 1 in my left eye and a 2 in my right eye and think it was the wearing of hard lenses for 20 years from 18 - 38 that kept the condition hidden. It was only by going for a Lasik surgery suitability assessment yesterday after 10 days in specs, that the condition showed itself.

I was initially a little surprised and rather nervous about what the future might hold sight-wise, but I realise from reading some of your posts here, that I'm actually REALLY fortunate to be able to see well with soft lenses and that I should count my blessings rather than whining about how inconvenient they are.

Wikipedia has an illustration of what KC suffers sight is like and when I saw it, I was actually quite excited as this is exactly what it's like for me. It's funny how empowering it is to know that 1. you're not alone, 2. you're not imagining it, 3. you're not a freak and 4. other people understand.

Sorry I'm babbling, but it's still a little overwhelming and there's a lot to take in, but hello and thank you for putting up with my first post.

Rita

Hi Rita and welcome!
There are probably loads of people out there with mild KC who never discover they have the condition unless, like you, they go for Lasik surgery. As your KC has stayed so mild all these years, hopefully it'll stay that way, and you'll be able to continue getting good vision with your soft lenses.
All the best
Anne

Hi Rita!
Nope, you are neither alone nor imagining things. As for freakishness - well, some of us are a bit eccentric....
Hope your KC stays stable and your soft lenses continue to do the trick.
Rosemary
