msl and graft

Postby jamesar » Tue 15 Jul 2008 7:11 am

Ok, I think I am going to get a graft in my left eye. I am getting really fed up with having to wear a lens, no matter the comfort level, all day and half the night. To the people that have already recieved a graft, I was wondering if you have worn a mini scleral or scleral lens over the graft and how long post op. I like the mini sclerals, but just dont seem to be able to take wearing them for such a long period of time. However, I would still like ot occasionally wear the lenses post graft, it at all possible.

Thankyou my fellow keratocinites :)

Hi Everyone

I just joined the Forum yesterday... I was looking for help online and found this Forum and was very surprised and happy at the same time. I need people to chat to about my issues, people who understand what I am going through. When I tell my friends about my eyes and my journey they are usually appalled, agape and unable to comprehend or offer me any comfort!

My history - I am 40 (turned 40 this year) and I am Kenyan! I found out I had keratokunus from a missionary hospital in Kenya in 1987. I was put on contact lenses and finally when my eye was too 'sharp' I had my first graft in 1990. And my second one in 1992. And in 1992 I came (went) to the UK to do my masters in Norwich - my stitches from my second operation were removed in Norwich at the eye hospital there. Not sure if anyone has experience with Norwich. And after my masters I went back to Kenya! So I have Kenya and UK experience as far as keratokonus is concerned.

Both my grafts were donations from gentlemen in the US and were 'shipped' to Kenya and I was very very blessed to have benefited from those grafts. Those days the technology for preserving grafts didnt exisit in Kenya. The disappointed thing for me was to have to wear contacts even after the operation.

Now my eyes tire easily and get red.. I guess cause of air conditioning ... and the vision in my right eye has changed... I cant see much through it so I am panicking.

I need help - I dont know what to do although I will try and see a doctor soon.

HELP NEEDED:
I just moved to Canada, greater Toronto area in April - does anyone know any good doctors here that I should see?

Thanks everyone and I look forward to your responses.
All things work together for good....

I wear full-sized sclerals and had first graft in January. (Bit of a disaster, but that's a long story.....)
I had a scleral in the eye over the graft for the first time 3 months to the day post graft - it happened to be the next routine check-up appointment pre=booked long since with contact lens fitter.
He specified a new lens, and I eventually (!!!) psyched myself up to pay for the thing, and collected it about 6-7 weeks later.
It's now 5 nd a half months post graft, so I must have had the lens about a month.
The vision has gone from reading at about 5" to being very long-sighted -= the horizon looks fascinatingly sharp, and I had to nip out to the supermarket for a pair of reading glasses as my arms were far too short to read. I think my eyes are changing shape again as my arms seem to be shrinking again.....!
The tolerance is ... well, significantly less than with full-size sclerals either inthe other eye or the scleral/soft lens piggybacking combo I was wearing in pre-graft in the eye that was grafted. I recon about 7 hours max - the grafted eye doesn't exactly hurt if I keep it in that long, but the vision is deteroirating by then, and the eye feels pretty "uncomfortable" for the next couple of days. So I'm reckoning about half a day wear every third day.
Rob CM on these forums got his first post-graft scleral a month post-op and can wear it all day - wow! There's a thread about this called "early lenses post graft" or something similar.
DOn't know about mini-sclerals - the bigger the better for me. Errrrrm, maybe I should be careful that isn't misinterpreted!!
