Post graft questions

What about driving? when did any of you feel comfortable to drive on a highway (speed above 100km/hr) ?

i drove after 3 weeks, as I was used to driving with one eye anyway!

I have be driving fine with just one eye for a couple of years now.
It is amazing really how quickly the brain can adapt, it is slight unerving at first but you should be ok.
Parking is a different matter all together, mine is still very random!!

I had waited until I was registered blind before having my first graft. It took about a year for my sight to come back to a level where I could pass the sight test for a driving license. Then my sight failed again so I was back to square one. this time I had my license restored after only five months.

The long delay was due to my other eye also being blind. When I grew a cataract in my initial graft eye I was still did not have a spare eye on which to depend.

If in doubt ask your optometrist.

I now wear glasses with a "balance lens" over my left eye. In time I expect to wear a contact lens in that eye.

thanks for the responses about driving. i will practice driving with one eye now while i wait for my transplant. i hope i cope, because it is an important part of my work, and it is my own business (with partners) so taking a lot of time off is not really an option.

the only thing i don't like is driving at night. driving with one eye you do get used to and in fact become a better driver as you are more aware more likely to use the rear and side mirrors and to turm your head
think ofit as having a larger blind spot than most people!!!

Hi Chris, I dont know if you remmenber me but thanks so much for your message of support. I presume you have a date.

Great news is I survived, still off work and fragile but alive. Just want to say all the very best I will be thinking of you, be prepared form the build up of waiting to hit you after, at least it is me...now I just wait for the rejection to stop and rest. Catch up time for all those films I wanted to see but never had time. Take some nice calming music and maybe some fruit juice as it is refreshing when you wake up.

The staff were great, I was so nervous and scared I was awake the whole of the night before and the so called sedative pre-med didnt work !!!

It's going to be a long road just hope it will all be worth it, I have found this so hard. Guess all I can say to you is remember you are never alone and we r all here wishing you the very best, Im there with you, good luck. I was back at my pc in 4 days, hope to hear from you when you can

I have drops every day for anti rejection and infection, and I was told it could happen even after a year post op, but I am pretty confident it won't reject as all is well so far- fingers crossed
