Andrew- they have been fully informed about my previous history and i have to say they have been fantastic thats why they are treating me before and after with antibiotics and keeping me in hospital a little longer to observe me.

Also like you i have put this off for the past 5yrs and i do keep telling myself what have i to loose.

I will have it done im just having a bit of a moment as it gets nearer to the day

Hi Emma

I had my Graft done 5 weeks ago on my left eye. I was really worried and scared and I hate needles.

It was really not that bad just a bit of discomfort, for a couple of weeks but as long as you take your drops and have complete rest for the first 2 weeks you will be fine.

I am still seeing the consultant every two weeks.

Hi Leigh,

Try hard and not worry about the op, it sounds worse than it is! I had mine about 10 months ago, and although i had some early set backs, but all in all not been half as bad as i expected.

Welcome to the forum.

I have now had two grafts. My first in my right eye was a Penetrating Kerotoplasty; this involved removing the full thickness of my own cornea and replacing it with a full thickness donor cornea.

My second was DALK, this involved removing the outer layers of my own cornea and replacing this tissue with the outer layers of donor tissue.

Both operations went fine. I am now able to drive again!

it is natural to be aprehensive about any sort of surgery, but when you are looking back on the operation you will probably wonder what all the fuss was about.

i jst had my graft OMG it was painfull but i ok now i open my eyes a couple of times and its f9 I CAN C THK GOD i was really scared before going down but, now i will be able to drive and see my 4ends NOW its been 7 b seven years i can c the stiches and stuff but i ok with that i gotta go back monday for a check up but thk u 4 welcoming me and thk u for ur encouraging words

As to the removal of sutures: for my first eye (the one that had a PK) the first eight of sixteen sutures came out after 18 months and the remaining eight were removed four months later.

For my other eye, I am waiting at one year post-op for the sutures to come out. My surgeon is very happy with the progress my eye has made, and hopes to remove all the sutures in one go.

Against my experience you can set the experience of one of the forum's American members. He had his surgery last October on the day before I had mine: all of his sutures were removed just after Christmas. It seems that in the matter of suture removal as in everything else, Keratoconics are reluctant to be stereotyped.
