Part of my iris has turned black

Postby craigthornton » Sat 18 Aug 2007 2:36 pm

Just under 3 weeks ago, I had to have my graft resutured following an accident.

Today I noticed part of my iris has turned black, similar to Madeliene McCann though not quite such a large area.

I am in no pain, my eye has not redenned, nor has vision worsened.

When the surgeon and the team were talking around me the day after the op, I'm sure I remember him saying he removed part of my iris. Looking into this, it is a small procedure to help drain liquid from the eye.

I cannot get in touch with the hospital at the weekend (well I could, but don't class it as an emergency).

Any thoughts what it could be?

Craig

If part of your iris has been removed then that area would appear black, as bascially it would be the same colour as your pupil. Where is this black area?

I am not sure if this is a new thing or you simply have just noticed the missing area. Could you be more specific?

Craig

Can you telephone the ward? when I had my surgery they gave me a direct telephone line to the eye ward at Gartnavel. I was told that I could phone them, day or night, with any questions that arose. I never really had this black patch in my iris, but if I had, I'd have been on the phone right away.

Lynne's speculation does make perfectly good sense, but why not give the ward a little ring and tell them what you've noticed and ask whether this is normal and to be expected?

Yours aye

I have only noticed it BUT until Tuesday was using drops that made my pupil big so the pupil has only come back to its normal size in the last few days.

I will monitor its size and see if it increases, but it is only a small area and would tie in with an incision being made.

OK

This is sounding more like you just noticing an iridectomy (portion of iris removed by surgery)

Here is a picture of an iridectomy http://www.djo.harvard.edu/site.php?url ... page=GR_EM

If it looks something like that - then there is no need to worry!

Yes it is like that, similar size, though mine is more of a strip than a Vshape.

Craig, Dont worry! it is as Lynn says an iridectomy and they come in all shapes and sizes. It allos the fluid of the ye to drain more efficiently.
