Bob - I have worn corneals for years (pre and post grafts). The only time I've had an ulcer was when I got something behind the eye and was in a situation when I couldn't take the lens out, so the bit of grit got stuck and carried on irritating the eye. To my horror, by the end of the day I had already developed an ulcer. I was lucky - a week of leaving the lens out was enough for it to clear, and I was back to normal. So the lesson is, always get the grit or dust out straightaway. But I'm sure Sue will tell you that sclerals are the answer to all grit problems! Good luck. Anne

Thanks for the advice anne(1036)I do my best to take out the lens when there is some irritation, but its not always practical.I think it is more to do with the dryness of my eyes and maybe the fitting.I have heard of a clinic some in the north that photograph the eye from several positions in order to get the perfect fit.
Larry(((1035)There could be several reasons for this,it could be your cleaning and rinsing routine,or if this is just a recent problem you may have a small ulcer as when I had mine I couldnt bear any light at all.Feel free to drop me an email and we can discuss it further my email add is Bob1411@ntlworld.com
Cheers everyone Bob

I don't get burning when I put the lens in, but I'm very, very
sensitive to light, especially sudden changes in light. I've
had to give up doing lots of things in case someone there starts taking photos.

I too am very sensitive to light. I have noticed this for a long time even before I knew I had KC. I have learned to love my night shifts ;o)

I have quite bad light sensitivity, it takes me 10 minutes to get my eyes open in the morning when I turn the light on. I am finding driving to work on the bright mornings a bit of a nightmare, my sunglasses are my best friend!

Hi sue (1030)
thanks for your response, I have seen a GP today and he is going to refer me to my local hospital again. This wasn't my normal Dr, at first he wasn't very keen as I needed to have distorted vision to be referred by him!! I told him I had been diagnosed with KC, he looked it up in a book and then agreed!
I don't have too much of a problem to need to wear lenses in my workplace, but working in a (sometimes) dusty environment I could wear lenses with safety glasses on a permanent basis.
Inserting lenses makes my eyes tense up as my finger approaches, the scleral lenses seem a bit on the large side, I will ask my consultant about them.
Does the lenses solution come via prescrition from Dr or consultant?
Thanks for your advice.
I will keep in touch
mike

Yes, I had that problem but my doctor told me to put my eye drops in the refrigerator so that when my eyes burn the cold would help my capilars to recover and also she told me not to use just any kind of sunglases she recomended me "Maui Jim sunglases" and it really helped me with my driving and other day to day chores. Does anybody knows if there are any herbal remedies or vitamins or anything to help the dry eyes. thanks.. Joseph

I too suffer from light sensitivity and my optician suggested photochromic sunglasses. I find them particularly good for driving, especially as you don't have to keep taking them off and putting them on!

Hi Mike (1041), You are right, scleral lenses do seem on the large side - in fact they seem very large when you first starting wearing them! However, they aren't really - I think its just in comparison to the corneal lenses which are so small. Once you have got over the scary part, then you totally get used to them, and they are infinitely more comfortable than corneals. Defnitely worth a try.

Glad you got referred - we do sometimes have to persevere with these things so well done. I go to Moorfields Eye Hospital and get my solutions on prescription there, but I believe some people are able to get their solutions on prescription from their GP so that would be worth investigating. Push for prescription as it can work out pretty expensive paying the full price for solutions.

Maybe taking some deep breaths and trying to totally relax before putting in your lenses would help stop your eyes tensing up - I am sure it is all in the mind; your eyes know exactly what is coming and are trying to stop you! Might be worth a try. Let us know your progress and take care. SUE

Hi,I am 25 years old and have had KC for about 10 years.I wear RGP lenses in both eyes and without them I cannot do anything!!(been wearing them for about 6 years)Have had horrendous problems getting the fit correct, which also causes the light to hurt even more; as well as looking like something out of a horror film.I seem to go through this eveytime they change them. The fit is not to bad at the moment. My job means I am customer facing so have look quite normal.(New car salesman)I never go out without a pair of sunglasses. It helps with the light and hides my eyes from others.Sometimes my eyes are so bloodshot that it looks like I have been on the beer for a week!!(I wish)How can I improve this without seeing the AA!!Haha.Look forward to seeing the response.I cant stop smiling as I know I am not alone,it is help to read about others and their problems .
