Returning to work after intacs

Postby dplees » Sun 18 Mar 2007 7:35 pm

What is the average period of time that people usually have off work after being treated with intacs inserted with a femtosecond laser? I am self employed and am worried about taking sick leave.

I'm also curious to know how advanced my keratoconus is - i am legally able to drive with glasses and have - 6 astigmatism. Does this indicate it is probably not too far progressed?
I have read that intacs are more effective if the KC is in its early stages.

Many thanks
Four weeks and 12 hours to go.

Returning to work after Intacs

Postby Anne Klepacz » Mon 19 Mar 2007 11:25 am

It would be interesting to hear from others who have had Intacs fitted on how long they took off work. As it's a much less invasive procedure than a graft, I'd have thought you wouldn't need much time off at all.
Medical opinion does seem to be that Intacs work best for less advanced KC and if you're getting driving vision in glasses, you definitely seem to be in that category. Good luck!

If you get functional vision with just the INTACS (or do one eye at a time), you could probably return to work the next day without a problem.

Thats how it worked for me. I had only one eye done (left) and could get by with my contact lens in the other eye. I was back at work the next day.

This also assumes you don't have an extremely physical work environment (lots of heavy lifting).

Do you ever feel your intacs

Postby dplees » Wed 21 Mar 2007 6:49 am

Thanks for the replies, I feel alot happier now - I had intacs fitted 18 months ago, one fell out because it wasn't fitted deeply enough and the other wasnt inserted deeply enough but it is still in my eye and sometimes gets very sore - I was so photophobic that I was wearing sunglasses for 5 months after they were initially fitted.

Can you ever feel your intacs? I'd love to get to the stage that I could completely forget about my KC - it would be one less stressful thing to think about.

I can sometimes feel them when i am taking my contacts out of that eye.. but more of an awareness that they are there as opposed to soreness or discomfort.
