Solution problem

my 12 year old daughter has has Keratoconis for 2 years and has been wearing RGP lenses since September 06 prescribed through the REI in Plymouth.

She has been having problems with tolerating her lens in her worst eye since January. Have been back to the REI who say that the lens is a good fit so her solution may be a problem.

She was using Unique PH and was given AMO total care to try but this seems to have made both eyes worse and she couldn't wear her lens at all today. This makes school difficult as her sight is quite poor without lenses.

Has anybody got any suggestions on solutions which they have found to be good. She has eczyma as well which will affect which solutions are best.

I've always used the Boston Advance solution with my RGPs and I've never experienced any problems at all. I also have eczema.

The problem with solutions is that we can all develop bad reactions to them.

I wonder what she uses to rinse the lenses during cleaning? I think that a preservative free saline solution is probably safest.

Does she use Total for both wetting (as she gets ready to insert the lens) and for storing the lens?

I am surprised the hospital did not offer her a 'trial pack' of solutions. If you have a good high street optometrist, why not go in and explain the problem your daughter is having, and ask them for suggestions?

I had a very similar problem in 2005 and I was and still am using the Boston Advance solutions. What it came down to was the quality of tears my eyes were producing.

This lead to me trying many differnt eye drops and I found Systane worked best, but intially I had to use it every two hours which meant taking lenses out to use the drops. I then cut out all fizzy drinks, juice drinks, tea and coffee (well only have 2 cups coffeee per day). Other drinks replaced with watre and I drink at least 2 litres per day.

Now I only use the drops first thing before putting lenses in and last thing when I tke them out. Lens wear has leapt from 2 hours to 12 hours plus.

On the solution front, I know many who react to the preservatives used. They wash and store the lenses as normal. However when they put lenses in, they use preservative free saline to wash all traces of the storage solution off and fill the lens with a few drops of saline before putting their lenses in and this works well too.
