Yes Pat, I really think it is a question of getting used to the lenses. I seem to remember having a similar problem and it settled down.
Are Michael Jayston or Josie Lawrence the names you were looking for?

Pat,
Don't know if this is what I am supposed to be doing but I normally give my lens an investigative tap with the tip of my (clean) little finger. I hope this does not get howls of disdain but it works for me.
When I first got the lenses I was always worrying about the lens falling out and not noticing. As you get more confidence, it gets easier. At the end of the day the difference in eye-sight is enough to guage whether the lens is in or not but it took me a few months to learn to trust myself!
I was able to wear the RGPs for several hours at first but the optometrist said that some couldn't even look up at all when they first tried but they got 8 hours in the end. If that fails there are other kinds of lenses.
Good luck and keep your chin up, it will be worth it in the end!
Keep us posted.

Monday's report....
Lots of gunk in my eye(s) this morning although more in the "RGP" eye.
Had to drive today so put my soft lenses in. Took them out about 3pm and left my eyes to settle 'til 7pm.
RGP then in for almost 2 hours tonight - watched Bridget Jones - Edge of reason (nothing much else worth watching!) for about the 94th time and could actually see it clearly for the first time ever! My cat landed on my lap for the last 15mins of my lens wear - and I suspect he was the culprit for my eye starting to get really sore then! He moults constantly!
I'll try a longer morning session tomorrow (without the cat!).
G'Night folks.

Tuesday
Not going well today - I've only had my lens in for 45 mins and it's already driving me mad- really sore & scratchy . (No cat - he's asleep on top of my car....). Still got the outside edge. Used Systane before I put it in too.
I'll keep going but don't know how long for....
