Diary - getting used to my RGP's

Postby Pat A » Sun 21 Jan 2007 11:52 am

Morning all. Yesterday I managed 50 mins at which point it just had to come out. Was going to try for another period in the evening but unexpected guests put paid to that. I'm wearing it this morning - about half an hour so far and I'm "tolerating" it - just as long as I don't look up!.

But a question for anyone reading this please - how do you know if you have got it in the correct central position? I seem to be able to "see" the outside edge of the lens - from about the W position through to S and it's driving me nuts. But, unlike my soft lenses I can't see this one in my eye if I look in the mirror - partly because it's smaller, and partly because I can't see close up with it in - and the other eye the KC stops me from seeing clearly enough (I'm only wearing a lens in one eye at the moment - not sure if I had made reference to that in earlier postings) ! So I can't see whether it's central or not. Any offers?

Thanks
Pat

Hi Pat,

The lens is in the correct position if you can see through it! Unlike soft lens RGPs do tend to move slightly over the corneas, as you blink or they get caught on the eyelids as you look from left to right.

One way of seeing your lens on the eye is to hold a hand mirror up to the eye and get a reflection of this in your main mirror. You should then be able to see your eye from the side and the edge of the lens. (Hope this makes sense!)

Pat,

It depends where the cone is. In my right eye it is pointing towards my nose, so the lens sits to one side pointing to my nose.

When my pupil is fully dilated, the edge of the lens on the outer edge of my eye is right on the pupil margin meaning at night I can see the edge of the lens. You do get used to this and the feeling you can not look up.

Start with what is comfortable and build on that.

If you can see OK, then the lens is probably ion the correct position. When mine sits dead centre it is because my eyes are too dry, I can not see out of the lens and it hurts like hell!

Sounds like you are doing OK and the unexpected guest may have been a blessing in disguise to stop you over doing your lenses on day 1

Thanks both. Despite many contortions with mirrors I still couldn't see the lens! Never mind.
I've managed an hour and a half today. Certainly didn't get that "get this lens out of my eye" feeling today, although it's still uncomfortable.

I think from what my local optom said, my cone is slap bang in the centre of my line of vision - but I'll need to ask at Moorfields when I next go.
Struggled to remove it today - but didn't panic! Eventually it fell out when I wasn't expecting it to - just as well I had a clean white tea towel ready to catch it!

Next instalment tomorrow!

Pat
PS. Unexpected guests may have contributed to somewhat dehydrated eyes & headache this morning.....!

Pat

Your RGP is supposed to move when you blink, so do not be alarmed if this happens. It will "self correct" on your eye as you move about through the day.

If it moves off your cornea (so that you are no longer looking through it), then you have to take it out and put it back where it belongs.

Best of luck with the lenses! As Andrew says the lenses are supposed to move around when you blink so don't worry about it. You should be concerned when they move too much as in as you can't through them.

Build up wear time slowly as ity is very easy to overdo it when you can suddenly see!

Pat - I had a set of lenses once where I could see the edge of it also. People thought I was crazy but I was sure that's what I was seeing.
It was worse every time I blinked as I'd see the lens move!!!
I asked my optometrist at the time and he wasn't very helpful. I went to someone else and they increased the diameter of the lens and the problem was solved. My vision stayed perfect when I blinked and it made such a big difference.
If the problem persists speak to your optometrist as it may be something that can be fixed!
All the best..

What you have descibed is exactly what is happening to me. I can still see through the lens but I can see it move when I blink and I can see the lower & outside edge (hey you cricket fans - remember Brenda Blethyn & Timothy Spall & someone else whose name escapes me in that wonderful series!) all the time. I wasn't sure whether it was in the right place hence my original question.

I'll give it time and see how it goes but your message is very helpful thanks - at least I know I'm probably not going mad!

I tried a larger diameter lens, but could not get good vision from it.

The intial movement with lenses when you are new to them is common. I think partly because your eyes watter more than normal as they get used to the lenses. As I got used to the lenses the lens movement became so small that I no longer see it. The lens still moves because it needs to so that tears flow behind it to help oxygenate the cornea.

The main time I see the edge of my lens is if the light source is bright such as a spot light or a light bulb with no shade. Diffused light is not a problem and I do not see the lens edge.

I could go into more detail, but then I would be giving an introduction to Physics and the properties of light.

I've already told you I failed my Physics A-level!! (But my son is an M Phys (Hons)...so presumably he has picked up his talent from someone...!)

I'll just have to see how it goes.
