Piggybacking, soft lens options

Postby IH » Wed 27 Dec 2006 5:00 pm

Hi all,

Before I post I’d just like to thank the people who contribute, you have made this an excellent forum and resource for people with KC.

For those of you that piggyback (soft lens under the RGP), do you find some soft lenses provide better comfort that others? Maybe they provide a better “cushionâ€Â

I did try piggy backs for a very short time, but couldn't cope with them. Others, I know, find them an excellent and comfortable solution to their vision problems.

All the best

I went through a period where I tried a thicket lens..both a Kerasoft and also a thicker monthly disposable....both worked better for me........

Andrew,

Can I ask why it didn't work for you? Was it similar to me in that you could still feel the RGP?

Cheers

I think that there were two problems: I couldn't get a "soft" under-lens to fit comfortably and my eyelid was irritated by the RGP. The effect of these two problems was that I had too much pain to wear the double lens, and my eye became inflamed.

That said, I do know people who benefit greatly from piggy back lenses, and who would not be without theirs.

Keratoconus really does vary from one person to the next.

I hope you fare better than I! :D

I currently use dailies supplied by moorfields with my rgps.

The eyes do tend to dry out but I generally am not aware of the RGP. It does take longer to put the lenses in and some days it is a complete pain.

I will check the names of the soft lenses i have used and post again.

Hey there!

I use the same soft ones you do supplied by Moorfields and find them really comfortable! I think that it has a lot to do with the RGP you use with it as before i was given a new one (profile) i could always feel it and it dried out too quickly.

I do have days where my eyes hate me! But i find that thankfully there are less of those now that i piggyback.

Best of luck with it ... Sweet X x X

Hi,

The soft lenses I use are dailies bomedics ocular sciences.

I am still using my rgps pre piggy backing.

I have tried focus dailies and ciba vision. The biomedics are the most comfortable out of the ones I have tried.

The only gripe is the packaging.

Most days I wear my lenses for 14 - 16 hours.

My decision to piggy back was after saying no to a graft and asking what else can I do on the contact lens front, I was offered scleral or petri dishes as they looked and felt like. I had to ask to try piggy backing and was surprised to discover all it entailed was wearing a soft lens to protect the cornea and wear the rgp on top. Not rocket science but very very good.

Sweet & James - Glad you are both able to get good comfort from your piggybacking. I won't be giving up and will (on the advice of a my optom) try a different soft lens to see which works for me. I will also be looking into the possibility of a softer lens in place of the RGP when I have my visit later next month.

Thanks all.

I use Acuvue Advance lenses (8.3 -0.50) which I replace every 14 days under my Dyna Intralimbal RGP on my left eye.

I also have INTACS in that eye.

I am eagerly awaiting the post surgical Synergeyes lenses to be released in the US in hopes of dropping the piggyback, though it seems to be getting the job done for now. Current Synergeyes and Softperm lenses do not have a large enough diameter on the RGP portion of the lens which would rub on the INTACS.
