KC Eye Irritation/eye drop substance

Postby Ben » Mon 18 Dec 2006 8:00 pm

Hello, Is it alright to ask for a bit of advice?

I went to an appointment with a nhs opthamologist to try and fit a RGP lens in my right eye (with quite bad KC). Anyway, the consultant put a few drops of something which he said would sting, and it did! He said this would help with the sensitivity, but I fear that my sight has deteriorated since this. Does anyone have any idea what this substance may have been? i have been unable to speak to the consultant since, the appointment was only a couple of days ago.

Any advice would be very welcome!

Regards and Merry Christmas to all!

Ben

Ben

It sounds as if they may have put in a local anasthetic via the eye drops.....which does sting.....any visual issues should have cleared up within around 4 hours........

Only other thing I can think of is dialating drops........it may be worth calling them back if you are really concerned and its made that much of a difference....as that doesnt sound right.....

Hello and Thanks for the reply.

Thats helpful to know that.

Also perhaps after not wearing a lens for a long time then wearing a test lens for a few hours with good vision, then going back to how it was is difficult in the realisation of the sight lost?

Thanks so much for the advice.

It is dreadful when, after wearing a lens and having goo vision, we have to go back to life without a lens. Hopefully your recent experience is a stage in a process that will deliver well fitted lenses and give you many year of comfortable lens wear and good vision.

I agree that if you have a bad reaction to an eye drop given in hospital, it is a good diea to go back to the clinic and have an ophthalmologist look at it.

On a general issue: I'd never let anyone (physician, surgeon, optometrist or nurse) put anything in my eye without asking "what is it, what will it do, will it hurt and are there any known side effects?" I have never found that there was any reluctance on the part of professionals to answer these questions.
