Medicanal effects of alcohol?

Postby GarethB » Tue 12 Dec 2006 10:07 pm

Following on from BugZ post about unemployment and on a drinking not I find red wine makes my eyes feel more comfortable and takes the dryness away :?

Drinking white wine actually improves my unaided vision :?

What other strange effects does alcohol or any other food or drink substance have in a positive way on your KC?

Raw oysters make me very happy. I live an hour from the best oysgter bar in Europe (Loch Fyne), but in an emergency I could get to Glasgow and have oysters at any pne of a number of very good restaurants.

I have noticed that sparkling mineral water improves my unaided vision, and think this may be due to both the hydration and the salts. (Byt he way I think that the sparkling water may also have a negative impact on bone density, so a bit of a trade off here) Like Gareth I find red wine seems to improve the general "comfort" of my eyes.

I hadn't noticed any vision effects, I always thought my vision would equally bad at the beginning and end of an evening!
I suppose its the next day that is the worry. Too much wine = no lenses. I do not drink much anyway but if I go beyond a couple of glasses I know the next day will be a BED, so I tend not to.

Never specifically thought about it - but will have to carry out some medical research when the sun goes over the yard arm tonight methinks!! A nice bottle of Rioja beckons!

I never really drink very heavily. The effect I mention is usually just a glass of red wine. White does not have the same effect. I am wondering whether the other health giving chemicals in red wine have an impact on eyes as well as hearts etc.?

Normally, if I have a glass of red wine, I also have a glass of sparking mineral water. At all other times I drink the still mineral water from the same spring as the sparkling. It is Scottish! :D

The wine can come from Spain, France, Chile, South Africa, Australia, Italy or just about anywhere else that grows grapes.

Can't say Iv'e noticed a visual improvement but then I don't drink as much as I once did. Red wine gives me migraine within half an hour of even a sip so I omly use it in cooking. However I do like a good malt occaisionally, neat of course

Cognac for me, doesn't help my eyes but makes the world seem a better place!

Just to pass on some info. on, a professor who works in the field of Keratoconus, told me that red wine (he stressed very expensive red wine was the best) was good for the retina, adding to this, smoking is ment to be good for KC due to its crosslinking effect in theory on tissue he said, but its not worth trying this one out!

Diabetes patients have the same rate of KC as non-diabrtes patients, but the advancedness of there KC seem to be less, it was seen in a study.

I was talking some german friends of mine who swear by an anti-oxident supplement they take, which was researched by a Dr in Germany at an university with a study.

Sorry Lou, I did not see your post, you posted the same time I did...

Pardon the pun... but have you tried to get blind drunk, just to see if there was any effect at all? :P

Honestly, when I've had a "few" jars, the next day, there does seem to be a better veiw through my corneas...
