I have had KC for 14 years but never being able to wear my RGP contact. I found them so uncomfortable I never used them.

Because I suffering with a lot of headache and also often felt weird sea sick I decided to try RGPs again. I Spent 14 months with them. My eyes was always red I got so sensitive to light that I couldn’t watch TV anymore so I stop use the contacts. Better to have headache and seasickness then constant eye pain I thought.


But at the same time I found the vision with the RGPs fantastic. Going form hardly being able to se the top line on the eye chart to 20/35 on my right eye and from 20/40 to 20/30 on my left was a huge difference. So I decided to leave my mainstream contact lens fitter and try to find a contact lens fitter expert in fitting medical contacts.

A found a contact lens fitter use to fit people with KC a few hours drive from my place The way she treated my eye problem was completely different. She told me that if my eyes got red and I experience pain I should take them out and call her and she wanted to check if the fitting. After a few try and errors I got a pair of contacts I could wear for about 10 hours a day, Al I have to do was to use eye drops once an hour or so.

Thank you for sharing all this with us. In the UK there is a wide variation between lens fitters who are experienced in fitting KC eyes and those who really just fit routine prescriptions.

My own experience was that I saw a hospital based optometrist, but some high street oiptometrists in the UK have practices based on 'medical' fittings. I did try a hard lens with a soft skirt, but this was late in my esperience, and my eye would not tolerate it. I know of others who have had a very positive experience with this sort of lens.

You join a large number of people here who are admirers of Systane (I am not counted among them, but I know that for those who use it Systane has been a great boon).

on the subject of dry conditions affecting your eyes,when im in damp old england i have nothing but grief with my lenses on a daily basuis but when im in greece,which in the summer is cloudless and dry for months on end and rather arid and dusty,i have not even 10% of the problems i do in England

I find Systan lubricating eye drops are the onlyones I need use twice a day, the others are as David experiences, need to use on an hourly basis or more frequently.

As a result the times I need tinted glasses are far less. In a differetn office today (working Sundays again!) so I am not allowed to change other people work stations so out come the glasses or varying tints just to make things comfortable.

Samba; I find damp old England far better for my eyes, just goes to show haw varied we KC sufferers are.

Looking at the web site they are a US based manufacturere of what we call in the UK Soft Perm contact lenses.

The person who currently looks after your eye care should be able to source these. They may or may not be able to source them from SynergEyes or their own prefered supplier of a SoftPerm lens manufacturer.

I’m told that Synergy eyes work after the same idea as softperm contacts, a hybrid contact with a soft shirt and a rigid center but they are not the same contacts.
I think Synergy eyes contacts for KC have been on the market for less than a year. I also understand that these contacts are highly oxygen permeable.
I checked with the company and these contact are still only available in the US and they couldn’t give any dates when they will be available in UK.
