Falling below the driving standard
Moderators: Anne Klepacz, John Smith, Sweet
I was well below the driving standard (actually below pedestrian standard) when I had my first graft and was driving 6 weeks later, with uncorrected vision of 6/6 out of the grafted eye. Definitley not the norm. He took my first stitch out and the world came into focus. It was like one of those movie scenes when they wake up and the vision starts to come in. I continued uncorrected for 9 years after the first graft (8 after the second) and now have glasses. I am 6/6 with glasses.

Actually, Barney, that's a thought I have fairly often.
If *I* am allowed on the roads with my vision, what's everyone else's like?!
At least because of our KC, we know our limits, and most of us will not drive if we cannot see adequately.
A sizebable proportion of the population would apparently fail the DVLA eye test, yet are still on the roads.
Scary stuff!

According to one of my Institute of Advanced Motorists magazines it is estimated from drivers stopped at random and that have then been asked to read a number plate at the ide of the road, about one in three motorists fall below the driving standard!!!!
This changes to 1 in 6 when those tested that failed took their glasses out of their pockets and put them on!

I think that I am more worried by Gareth's final aside than by the other figures mentioned here! I wonder how many people drive around with their specs in their pockets?
I have another wee problem. For the first time in a very long time my brain is receiving information from my left eye. This is muddling me up, and I often find myself closing my left eye to see things clearly. The upshot will be very much imoroved binocular vision, but it is going to take a bit of getting used to the improvement in colours, depth preception etc, and then (hopefully) the return of sharp vision in my left eye. Oh joy!
