I also suffer bruising from walking into the door frames and door handles, even worse is catching your arm on the latch of the door! I always thought it was clumsiness on my part but reading these comments I suppose my vision has something to do with it. Probably spacial awareness or something like that.

With stairs I tend to use the toe and heel method but if I'm not sure about them or it's somewhere new I tend to hold the hand rail and walk down one step at a time as opposed to the normal way of walking down stairs.

Another thing, does anyone else find they step off a kerb which isn't there? It jars the back terribly and before anyone asks I'm always sober when that happens :D
Graham watched me do it one time and he couldn't understand how I managed it.

Hi Sarah and welcome.

I don't have the stairs problem but do knock into things and in particular I keep banging my head on the car boot lid and other low ceiling situations, eg under staircases at ground floor level.

Alison; door handle problem easily avoided around the home, remove them all

Hi Sarah and welcome, it is apparent that there are many hospitals unaware of this group.

Last week when I had my check up I commneted to the optom how nice it was to see a pile of KC leaflets for people to pick up. He never knew they were there or that there was a support group.

I went out and handed him one, so he may be viewing these posts and learning more about what the patients feels.

You know you really shouldn't put ideas like that into my head.

I've done the kerb thing in the past Lesley, and yes it does jar horribly. :(

Does anyone else dread being given a drink in a cup and saucer? I find it altogether too much to try to keep the cup balanced while trying to accurately work out the distance to the nearest table so I don't smash it down too hard, and at the same time keep a conversation going. Just give me a mug! :D

Alison,

I so agree with the cup and saucer problem. My co ordination isn't great at the best of times so I am much happier with a nice chunky mug.

I discovered a few years back that I am very mildly dyslexic, my eldest son was being tested and when they told us his results it was as if I was looking into a mirror because I had had exactly the same problems, including a lack of co ordination, when I was younger only when I was at school I was stupid not dyslexic! Is it possible these things could be related to KC in some way? My son doesn't have the KC but he is quite short sighted.

I've probably opened up another can of worms here but it was just a thought that occured to me.

Lesley,

My dyslexia is much improved with contact lenses that have a slightly different colour tint, my right lens is darker.

Without the tint, but the same lenses for KC it is as if the letters are floating above the page and sometimes overlapping.

I had the same with glasses and the ani glare tint reduced this but never stopped it like lenses do.

Hi Gareth,

My problem is that it takes me a while to read something, I sometimes have to read and re-read the same paragraph a few times to get it right but it doesn't bother me too much. When I wore corneal lens they were tinted but they can't tint sclerals.

The problem my son has and I suffer from as well is an inability to read something on a blackboard and then copy it down on paper, something to do with short term memory, I was terrible at school I always had to copy from the person sitting next to me. I can't take dictation either as I can't listen and take notes at the same time.

I must admit that if I posted my replies as I write them they would be odd to read, I spend ages checking the spelling before submitting something. My grammer may be hopeless but I like to get me words right :D

Lesley,

I know exactly where you are coming from, I have that problem too.

Far better to sit in meetings and listen intently and as soon as it is over, then I can make notes. Two together is impossible.

Gareth, isn't that something to do with multi tasking?

I can't multi task even to the extent that if I am making notes at a lecture, I will miss everything being said whilst I am writing.

As I have said before, I don't have too much of a problem with stairs, but I have a habit of putting toothpaste on the back of the brush instead of on the bristles, with or without lenses. I guess that's the 3D problem.

Michael,

I overcame the toothpaste problem by getting a red toothbrush that has white bristles.

The colour contrast means I can get it the right way up. Then to get the toothpaste on properly is a case of dragging the end of the toothpaste tube over the bristles. Srays a little, but at lest the toothpaste makes it to the brush and not the floor :D
