floaters

i am post KC i suppose, 3 corneal grafts, last one was in 2000, i was just wondering whether any body else out there post graph suffers from floaters they are worse in my left eye which is the oldest graph 1989, have mentioned it to optition when i have been for eye tests but they said they are normal

Hi Justine,

First started to get floaters when I was diagnosed with KC, got slightly worse after a graft. I only see them if I have no lenses in.

They are perfectly normal, apparently you can get more as you get older. My brother has them now and has never had KC or eye surgery and he is a wee bit older than me.

According to the OED a floater is

a loose particle within the eyeball that is apparent in one's field of vision.

I think it can also be a loose particle on the surface of the eye, but I am not going to quibble with the Oxford English Dictionary on this point. (at the moment)

By the way, Matthew, I like your reference to and quote from the great "sword saint" Miyamoto Musashi.

I enjoyed the book of the void (the fifth of his book of five rings). I have never been much into Martial Arts (if you saw me you would understand why), but have always appreciated the minimal approach to war and honourable approach to life that the samurai traditionally embodied.

Wasn't it Miyamoto Musashi who advocated the two sword method of fencing?

I seem to get loadsa of floaters.
Well, strictly speaking, they aren't "floating", in that they will stay in the same place if I keep my eyes really still.
Like ggrey smudges, or streaks.... or in fact things like tiny bts of knotted string floating across my field of view whenever my eye moves.
No-one at Moorfields has ever shown the slightest interest.
They seem to be worse in summer - whether this is hot weather, or bright light I don't know - I suppose they are more visible in bright sunlight.
I've been told not to worry about them, they're normal.
Well. I don't worry about them damaging my eyes - just that they are a pain in the (wherever!) because it is so much harder to read with little black knots in the way of the page.

thats exactly what i experiance black dots everywhere i look, and is worse in the summer time, keep thinking its a small bird then realise its following my line of vision lol,
any way glad i am not the only person having these things

the worst thing about my floaters is that, when I've got the contact lens in my right eye and I'm sitting here at the computer, I keep thinking I see huge big SPIDERS!!!!! running across the carpet somewhere near my right foot!
