Help, new lenses

Postby jeremy » Tue 18 Jul 2006 7:29 pm

Hi, i've just been given my first pair of rigid lenses. I've had them a week now and they are driving me crazy, i dont see the specialist again for another couple of weeks. Being a bloke when i was given the lenses i didnt ask any questions about how long it would take to get used to them, or how uncomfortable they would be. I'm up to about 7 hours a day, i'm supposed to be at 9hrs by now, i find them difficult to see through and so irritating i'm finding it hard to concentrate at work.
Is this normal? Or am i just being a wosse?

Any comments appreciated, thanks in advance
Jez

Jeremy
Hello and welcome. You should build up the wearing time according to how you are coping...better to start with less time and be comfortable..then them driving you mad. I remember when I started to wear them (30 years ago)..felt like I had a plank of wood in my eye..and I was determined to wear them as long as I possibly could....but in reality you need to listen to what your eyes are telling you..you don't want to get to the position where you can't wear lenses...so TAKE it SLOW......good luck...I still am wearing rigid...normally from 6:30 am to 10:30pm...every day of the week...so I'm sure it will get better

Jeremy,

The times quoted are pretty much for non-KC people to be honest.

Heat, light, air conditioning etc all have an effect on how long we can wear lenses and I am talking those of us who are used to wearing them.

It does take time and a week to 9 hours would be good going.

General rule of thumb is that while getting used to lenses they do hurt and vision is blurred to differing levels from person to eprson. However as you build lens wear this settling time gets less.

Then as you are building up lens wear, if they become uncomfortable take them out and rest your eyes. For some this means bathing them in cool water.

It is also possible the lens fit is not quite right, but only the optom will be able to say, but in the meantime they will say perserver as it has onlly been a week.

If you do make 8 hours, I would say stick at that until you have your next check up.

Keep a daily diary of how things go and then you will have all the information the optom will need when they ask how the past couple of weeks have been. Record everything, when the lenses were comfortable, when the irritated, what the sensations were both good and bad.

Lens fitting is as much an art as it is a science.

Your cornea may well be changing shape slightly as it 'mould' to the shape of the lens.

Putting a piece of plastic in your eye is not natural either.

On your next visit if comfort is still a problem ask about lubricating eye drops which can aid comfort.

In the meantime with this heat and any time of year for that matter ensure you drink plenty of water. We should drink at least 2 litres of water (more in hot weather) and that is in addition to anyother type of drink.

Hope this helps.
Gareth

Exactly what the others have said! I've been trying to get settled with RGP's for over 2 1/2 years now. My right eye is sorted but I can't get a comfortable fit in the left.

All I can suggest is that you take it slow, don't push yourself or you'll end up making things worse for yourself.

:)

Hi Jeremy, I used to have the same tolerence like you describe in the early days,
I must confess that my current lenses 'Rose K' are fantastic and i do get a full days wear 7 days a week.
I'm not on commission for the manufatures but my current lnses are the best i've had in 20yrs since first diagnosed with KC
maybe you could ask your practitioner about other makes of lens
Derek
