I think it's a middle distance thing. I am a bit clumsy putting cups onto tables etc., but further away things I can judge pretty well.

Oh yes, I too have problems with stairs, and kerbs too for that matter 
I also use Gareth's suggestion of letting the handrail tell me in advance when the stairs are changing.
If there is one thing that annoys me though, it's the glass staircase we have at work. I've been known to use the lift to descend one floor to avoid that blasted staircase

Yet another thread that has had me going wow, that's exactly how it is for me as well. 
I get incredibly nervous of making a complete fool of myself in unfamiliar surroundings. Steps and knowing exactly where the table is when I put a glass or cup down is the worst (don't get me started on coping with cups and saucers
). Considering how well I see depth perception really shouldn't be a problem but it is, especially when I'm in lighting conditions that bother my eyes.

Yep that too; cups are nearly as lethal as stairs.
Once, while staying in a guest house in North Wales I decided to make myself a nice cup of hot chocolate to sip in bed while listening to the hurricane outside the window (this being Wales in August!
). I had taken my contact lenses out as I was retiring, so I was reling on my glasses. I took a sip of chocolate, which was too hot so went to replace it on the night stand. I misses, of course but somehow managed to catch the cup as it fell. Unfortunately, in so doing I pulled the cup up wards, spraying hot chocolate literally all over the room - over the bed, carpet, wall, CELLING, bathroom door and the cutains.
Needless to say I spent half the night cleaning my room with nothing but my flannel and the towels. I had to get my dad up to wash the celling as I could not reach.
By strange coincidence it is one of the last holidays my parents took me on - funny that!!

i often walk past people i know without acknowledging them simply because i'm 2 focused on finding where i'm going! yet when i'm driving i stair straight ahead (and still can't see anyone!) worst experience ever was camping in the pitch black in the middle of a field in a little country village - not a house 4 miles, being students we remembered the essentials (food, drink.....) but forgot matches to light the BBQ and lights - needless to say i quitely took my beer and stayed very close to the tent!
What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight - it's the size of the fight in the dog.
