Ultasonic Cleaners

Hi all

Has anyone used or still using an ultrasonic lens cleaner?

At the minute I clean and rince my lenses whenever they feel unconfortable and am getting through gallons of all in one solution.

My consultant mentioned ultrasonic cleaners in passing at my last visit but said they hadn't been approved. After a look around the internet there are a few available but i don't want to risk damaging my lenses.

As they just use saline there should be a huge cost saving.

Any thoughts?

I have seen them for soft lenses, but never hard lenses.

The soft ones use an all in one cleaner.

To be honest working in the medical industry I can not see saline even if used with ultrasonics will clean a lens as well as a proper cleaning solution.

The problem we have at work when we use things that are bulbous like a contact lens, the thickness of the vessel wall varies depending on the curvature just like our lenses. Therefore we do not use the ultrasonic bath as it will cause the glass to break.

I knwo RGP material is slightly more flexible, but I would still urge caution if such devices have not been licensed. there will be a very good reason.

Plus you would have to use a disinfectant cleaner aftre the lenses have been cleaned. ultra sonics will not kill bacterea and fungi that cause eye infections.

They may clean your lenses quicker, but you might end up using a load more other solutions.

Sorry to be negative, what I have seen on the auto cleaners for soft lenses I am not convinced.

Hello there.

Yes lens solution can be expensive! I clean my RGP with cleaner then rinse it well with saline before i use conditioning solution and soak it. This means i am not wasting loads of conditioning solution in rinsing the cleaner off as i can use loads of saline to make sure it is well rinsed! Saline is far cheaper!

You may want to check Ebay; as I saw many last year up for sale!

I have not used them myself, but have known others post on the old Kcenter board whom used them regularly and mentioned that they were worth using.......but take that with a pinch of salt.......I guess they MAY be good in removing any coating or filming that the standard cleaners / solutions cant get rid of?

If you are buying online, please be careful to ensure that the cleaner is compatible with the type of lens you wear.

I have an ultrasonic cleaner, which I bought on ebay. I use an all in one cleaning solution with it. I find it a bit of a fiddle and don't use it much. I also worry that it may damage my lens. I bought it in desparation, trying to get some comfort from my RPGs, but now that I've had my left eye grafted, my right lens seems more comfortable! Do other peeps find if one eye is irritated they both feel it!?

Yes whenever my good eye has a problem and i can't wear my lens my other eye complains and starts to ache like mad! LOL!! I think it is because i am desperately trying to use one eye and so it's stressful to both! Or at least that is my reasoning hehe along with the idea that my other eye just wants some sympathy as well!!

I bought a "lenspod" ultrasonic cleaner for just £16 from ebay last night and I'm hoping it will remove stubborn protein build up on an RGP which was kept in a storage case that dried out. My optometrist (who is probably reading this ) pointed me to this thread this morning. If you are feeling flush, the following cleaner can do all sorts (you may shudder when I mention possibly using a cleaner for lenses and MTB chains...) and has the UV output to kill the bacteria (allegedly)

Looks good...I guess the main reason for these is for removing film, deposits, and protein buildup..but a concern thats always stayed with these cleaners is the longer term effects on the rgp material......however...as we live in an ever changing cornea world.....I would suspect that many change lenses at least every 12-15 months......
