Lets face it, at the end of the day with every medical procedure, from sticking a plaster on a cut, right up to a heart transplant; there is some level of risk.

That is realistic, however the level of risk does naturally change accrding to the procedure.

At the end of the day I like many other KC sufferers require a cornea transplant as this the only way forward if I want to be able to see to a greater degree than having a knackered cornea. I also know that I have KC in my other eye which is getting worse.

I have decided to have the cornea grafted and it was my choice alone once that option was made available.

I have no qualms about the overall principle of what is being done as I regards this as a gift allowing me to have an oppurtunity to be able to see properly in my left eye.

No doubt I will have some worries as the time approaches and that is understandable.

I think that it is very important that a failure was highlighted here as it does show that there is a risk and so allows us respite from potential complacency.

Gareth

Thanks for that explanation. I guess that riding the kerb also slows you down a bit, so there is a double incentive to get the line right!

Paul

You have said something, that it not often seen when we talk of Corneal Transplants

"I have decided to have the cornea grafted and it was my choice alone once that option was made available. "

:-)

Good on you!

Spot on

that is empowerment, and empowerment comes through information!

Informed consent works, but without information there is really no consent at all.

Thankyou.

Seriously though it was my choice.

The consultant made clear the options and the hard work afterwards - was quite a lecture actually. He then made it clear that it is my decision whether to go ahead and that we would perform the procedure and the post up consultations.

So yes it is my choice and that cornea will be very very precious to me however the healing process goes.

Paul
