Hi Stace, and welcome to the forums.
I think you'll find that many of the people who post here are those for whom KC is a large part of our lives because we have problems with our eyes, lenses, grafts, visions,e tc. SO you'll read far more horror stories here than is usual in th general contact lens wearing population. Probably.
So, lenses. Congratulations on getting a diagnosis and into the "lens system", by the way.
Putting them in and getting them out is a knack you get the hang of. Snd then there's the bit about screwing up the courage to get anything so near theeyes without suddenly blinking and wimping out! I know, been there, done that. When I first got my first lenses, I couldn't bear to do it myself at all - I was always wimping out. The optom had to teach my mum how to do it for me.
Then came the day when my mum was in the bath and dr Who was on the telly in 5 minutes, and i reallyw anted to be able to see it properly.....
DO they hurt? - well, not on a good day. When I first got them they felt, well, odd. strange, something funny. I remember if I wanted to turn round or look round behind me, shutting my eyes and turnign round all of a piece.
That was a few years ago now, and I'm used to them.
I did build up the wearing time gradually, as others have said.
I now find that if they hurt when i first put them in, there's something wrong - not wetting properly, or I've got an eyelash underneath, or soemthing like that.
If they start to get sore, then they're telling me they've been in long enough and ought to come out now, please! - either they've been owrking long enough, of got dust under, or something.
Of course, sometimes, they are more comfortable than others - anything like a cold, hay fever, hangover (not that I get those, you understand), Pmt (and I definitely never get that, of course!), jet lag, or just feeling run down a bit can affect them.
but generally, most people with contacts just get used to them.
Having said all that, my left eye is currently very pink and sticky and sorry for itself! - it got sawdust under it on Thursday when I was putting down wood shavings bedding in the stable of the horse I lease for a day a week, and then yesterday it got washing up liquid squirted in it when I was going to do the dishes and was trying to find out why the nozzle had got blocked up. Oops.

Rosemary,
Your post has put the whole topic in context very nicely.
Thanks
This site has come a longw ay with the variety of people posting now. So rather than the bias being towrds those that may be condiderd the more extreme KC cases, we are getting the more regular types of KC if there is such a thing, so bringing the balance more in line with the general KC population.

hi stace and welcome to the forum,
you have already been given great advise and having worn lenses for a lot of years now all i will add is that in the beginning do take your time to build up the wearing time, it took me months to get beyond 4 hours a day when i first started wearing them but now can usually go as long as 15 hours on a good day and don't be put off with the bad days, which you will probably get as we KC sufferers all seem to get them, part of the condition.
keep in touch and let us know how you get on
