Jayboi,

When anyone starts a new job they are always a liability to a new employer as you are going on referneces and how someone performed in an interview.

I have had to terminate peoples employment because on paper they are ideal, but when it comes to working in a laboratory where what we make can kill if done wrong, they are a liability and I have to let them go. These are people we would term normal disability free.

We like anyone else are an asset to the work force, which is why I put in my earlier post, here we can help arm you with the answers to responses like you are liability. Ask why and give the responses we have given and those detailed in the employer leaflet.

Go for it, No is not an answer and you or any of us will not accept it.
Gareth

Hi

What rubbish some people spout.

Everybody is capable of doing something and DDA hopefully should protect those of us who need it.

What in reality is the issue is some people cant be bothered with the extra work that may be involved in employing someone with a disability.
In your case shame on the job centre they should know better and as others have said 'access to work' within the jobcentre and also action for blind people are both helpful ports of call for support.

DO NOT give up, we are more use than other people somethimes give us credit for!

best wishes (and belated birthday wishes)

Susan
don't let the people that mean nothing to you get you down, because in the end they are worth nothing to you, they are just your obstacles in life to trip you up!

Being used to having a lack og sight does have its advantages, at work we have an energy saving system that turns off lights if no movement is sensed.

For laboratory work I think this is dangerous but today they lights went out twice while I was opening some presurised units with a highly potent drug in. Each time I knew where the equipment was to finish the unit in question before putting the lights on agian.

My collegues who have always known good sight usually knock something over and loose the sample.

Hehe Gareth we have our uses in being able to see in the dark! LOL!!

Jayboi am sorry to read that you were feeling ill, am hoping that you have had some help and advice with this now and feel better. Also hoping that you are moving on in finding a job and that this lady in the job centre didn't put you off at all. People here though will motivate you when we have bad days and get even worse comments from others.

Take care and the best of luck, Sweet X x X

suited to my job

I've found that working in the NHS is great, especially for having regular appointments at the eye clinic. I have a very easy going boss and a great contact lens guy who between them cope well with my regular visits. Next time you are at the job centre enquire about any vacancies at your local NHS sites. Go NHS!

Sweet suggests we have our uses in being able to see inthe dark:
Ha.
You may laugh, but in all seriousnes.....
The church where I go and ring the church bells recently had a fire which knocked out all the electrics so there is no lighting, no power, no heat.....
Services are going on as usual except with short/no sermons (!!!!) and lots of candles and notices to wrap up warm.
The chief bell ringer has rigged up a generator and emergency lights in the beflry so we can ring the bells - but apparently if the generator runs out of fuel the lights just go out and we gt no warning. So there have to be some torches and people holding them around at all times, so if the generator cuts out in mid-=peal, there's enough torchlight to catch the sallies (the fluffy woolly bits part way up the ropes) and set the bells up to stop ringing in safety.
Well, that's what they say......
I'd never have thought of this.... but then, I'm probably the only one there who can ring a church bell not only without my contacts, but who can and does often stand there pulling this rope with y eyes shut.... much less confusing than seeing all those 32 ropes and shadows flickering about....!
