I'd be interested in that as well, althou it does state taking Dexamethasone cataracts can develop in susceptible individuals - I'm not susceptible and there is zero history of that in my family but accordingly with prolonged use (especially if there is substantial compromise of the ocular surface barriers) - only concerns me in that prolonged means e.g. over 10 to 14 days so I am going to raise this concern with my surgeon when I see him.
But then again I'm a hypochondriac and shouldn't read the possible side effects because it says in certain individuals; prolonged use can cause peripheral corneal thinning or scleral "melting" leading to perforation (when they start using words like 'melt' it piques my interests); over-use can increase risk of secondary infection (which makes more sense when the nurse told me to avoid crowds and ppl with any sort of virus or infection) ... Although I'm sure he's well aware of that and no doubt my 'course' is just short-term until my post op eval ... sometimes the more I know makes me worry, but then again also, if I don't know I worry even more bc I do have a very active (some say inventive) imagination!

But common, my eye might melt ... and all this time I was just concerned about cornea rejection lol!

This was and has always been my concern with Maxidex and the rest of the similar drugs in that the longer you use them the higher the chances of Cataracts! Sadly I have them very slight in BOTH eyes.....hence why I am currently on just one drop of Maxidex a day.

However, saying that, a cataract procedure is hardly major surgery even with a Transplant...so thats the good thing....but its just something Id rather avoid for at least another 30+ Years!!

I think anything above the 6 month mark at 4 drops+ a day should be monitored, but thats my opinion!

Well, post my graft I was on Chloramphenicol for a week or so and then preservative free dexamethasone (made by Moorfields and dispensed with - shock horror - rather cute eye droppers! ). Once the steroid drops were down to 4 per day, I switched to Maxidex (same steroid, but with preservative).

After about 6 months though I suddenly became sensitive to Maxidex - very high eye pressure resulted in my going blind for a few seconds when standing up as the blood was struggling to get into the eye!

I've been on FML pretty much ever since (now 4 years post-op) with occasional Pred and Maxidex for rejections.

BTW, Pred Forte is apparently a more penetrating steroid than Maxidex, and FML is just weaker.

Jay, yea actually i do remember having them before the op as well but as i couldn't see anything i didn't notice any vision problems! Maybe it is just very true that surgeons have their own way of working!!

Loved the witty replies, they made me laugh so much I was glad I'm wearing scleral lenses because my corneals would have floated down with my tears.

Thanks for the giggle.

But it occured to me, the usual things ppl would say, not that there's anything wrong with that, KC is rare so understanding of the condition is what ppl immediately perceive - but then I started to amuse myself with 'the things I wished I could say' ...

All the same: read the revised list posted below; as it reads better ;)

Yeah I know, not superlative wit, just testing and thought I'd share lol, I might try develop these into a catalogue of better honed KC handbook comebacks.

:D

This string has followed a circuitous route to where it is. I'm not surprised that Jayboi is confused! ME TOO.

For what its worth they never gave me any preservatives in my dexamethasone. I have an alergy to preservatives. but the point here is that, in French, "preservatives" do not preserve things at all. They are, well, designed more for prevention than preservation.

My sister worked at Le Centre Internationales de Recherches Medicaled en Franceville, Gabon. Like every Scottish ex-pat she went into the compound store and thought she was asking for strawberry jam. "des preservatives fraise, s'il tu plait".

She realized that she had made a mistake when the people started to laugh. She hurried back to her villa and took out her French - English Dictionary.

I can't read discourses about preservative free or with preservative eye drops without chuckling to myself.

I am sorry, I missed an opportunity to respond to a question about cataracts.

No sign of them, but this was a fear that did exercise my ophthalmologist. Maybe I ought to say "not yet" and keep thinking clear sighted thoughts!
