Agreed, few practitioners have the time to talk through all the things we talk about here, but at Moorfields I have always found Ken one of the best people to talk with because he will take that time and give all the info he knows of. I think on the whole optoms are better at this than opthalmologists. When I had laser treatment to seal off blood vessels growing into the graft it was like trying to get blood out of a stone to get any information about what he was doing and why.

I liked the epitaph I read once in a Shetland graveyard. It said the name of the person whose remains had been interred there, and then went on to say that she had been poisoned by medicine dispensed by a pharmacist on the mainland. I guess as a warning to others, it named the pharmacist!

(the biggest island in the Shetland archipelago is called the mainland, so I don't actually know if the pharmacist was on the shetland mainland or on mainland Scotland)

You just don't get that sort of public info on headstones any more!

I have had a graft for several years, never occoured to me there were so many dangers until I started reading here and elsewhere about it.

I still don't think that the dangers outweigh the benefits of having surgvery at the right time! Yes, we need to know the potential costs and the potential benefits. We weigh the benefits against the costs. If the balance tips to the benefits, probably most of us would go ahead. If the balance goes the other way, then some of us would still go ahead.

In part, it's a question of how much trust we put in our surgeons or in the theoretical basis of their proposed course of action.

For my part, I have nothing but respect for, and confidence in, my ophthalmologist. So, I know there are risks. I know the potential benefit. I know I trust my surgeon.

A question I have not had to face is being asked by the surgeon whom I trust if I would agree to some experimental procedure. What would I do then? I'd post a message here and let the good folks share their experience, and then I'd decide.

Oh one other thing ... I'd take a trip to North Cape in the autumn to watch the sunset, knowing that if I got back in Spring I could see it rise again!

As Andrew says, despite the many pifalls of a graft, the chances of any happening are quite remote which is why we take the plunge.

On the subject of graves, I hope billy Conolly carries out his idea, have a pressure pad on the ground and really small writting on the head stone so as you get close to it, a recording blares out '**** Off!!!!, you're standing on my ********!!!!!'
