I too was only able to work part-time while at 6th Form and Uni, and when I found myself in your situation they tried pulling the same one on me - I had to point out the clause on their own form that caters for this very circumstance - it covers people who have not accrued enough NI credits due to attending higher education.

Having pointed out their error it turned out I qualified to have the Incapacity Benefit pay my NI contributions for me, I also came to receive the lower rates of Income Support and Disibility Living Allowance for a time.

No doubt being registered blind you may qualify for additional/other help. Although I have to ask, were you registered blind and put on the graft waiting list by Carlisle hospital without them even trying to fit with you with contact lenses?!

Because if you had been provided with well-fitted lenses it would have made a world of difference to your life, and you probably would not have been registered blind (as it is based on your corrected vision so you may not have qualified).

I too went from diagnosis to graft in around 4 years, but that was only after going through dozens of lenses and having problems with dry eyes/lens intolerance and scarring. Even though I am happy with my graft I was annoyed when I later discovered that there were other types of lenses that were not offered to me first, so I can only imagine how you must feel - hopefully the 2 year wait for your graft will pan out to be a blessing in disguise.

I can't believe how you've been failed by the system - makes me realise how lucky I've been to have a decent eye department nearby and a reasonably understanding University.

Presh

Two things. Your benefit situation could do with some outside advice: if you have a citizens advice bureau in your area, go and see them. They will be able to advise.

Also, your local authority's sensory impairment team ought to be able to give advice on disability allowance.

The Job Centre's access to work team will support any potential employer in the necessary adjustments to the workplace.

All the best with your graft when the time comes in march. In the meantime, ask your Carlisle surgeon for a referral to a contact lens specialist in your area. They are sure to have some idea of who can do the job!

Which University was it?

Presh,

There is some good news however, one of the things access to work can do and it was offerd to me. They can arrange transport for you such as paying for a taxi to take you to and from work so getting to work is no longer a problem.

They will do it for 4 miles as they offerd to do it for me and my daily round trip is 80 miles.

Have you got an appointment to see the disabilities person at the Job Centre to discuss your situation and your current needs so they can help find you a job. Access to work will also pay for all the equipment your new emplyer may need to allow you to do your job, so no financial burden to them. Anne has already sent several copies of the employer KC leaflet to help them, John has put a sticky at the top of the discussion forum with a link to a downloadable version, this will help the Job Centre too.

The fact you have been unable to work for so long will probably mean once you do get a job, you will be more motivated than most when you start.

Let us know how that side of things go.

Regards

Gareth
