I always see that horible name Ventolin, there are about a dozen products that are exactly the same as Ventolin, it is really about 1mg of Salbutamol Sulphate, 5% Ethanol (I think) in a propellant P134a . The propellant is the same as the regrigernat in most modern fridges, freezers and car air conditioning systems, but as it is used as a refrigerant you may know it as R134a.

I would never suggest taking a large dose to turnyourself into a fridge

Refrigeration for the lungs?

Just wanted to say that in Glasgow we have a homeopathic hospital as part of the NHS. The unit is part of the hospital I attend for KC.

Is this unusual?

I actually did go to one of these Chinese places and had a consultation with the gentlemen. And after telling them of KC he recommended 5 sessions of Acupunture?....Is this right? This was some 18 months ago, mind you

I didnt really think much of it, and thought he was just waffling and walked out....as he didnt really ask what KC was, untill I asked him if he knew what it is......which is always alarming!

I know this is not homepatheic per se; but just was curious

From the confrence last year, one of the speakers showed results of accupuncture, although on a very small sample, there were indications that it may have benefits in managing the condition regarding tear production and lens comfort. Another area that would require further investigation.

I know accupuncture works as it keeps my back moving after an accident I had in 1987 which reullted in 2 vertebrae being wired up and six months in hospital

The accupuncture was far better than any physio I had.

With any treatment there can be the placebo effect too.
There is a homeopathic hosp in London but I doubt the GP would refer me for asthma and there's probably a 2yr waiting list anyhow. I live in Camden Town Janet, where all the very cool or very strange folk live [no comments about which catergory I fit please!]

Louise is right. The placebo effect is no doubt strong, but it ought to be possible to devise a system of testing that controls for placebo. If two groups, experimental and control, exhibit different results, then the variation can be assumed to be the therapeutic benefit of the protocol being tested.

I have seen, in other areas, some very interesting results for acupuncture and homeopathic interventions.

Now, here comes the controversy: just because an intervention has a measurable effect does not mean that the practitioner's explanation is true! There are a number of stages to this procedure: test for an effect, then if one is observed try to find a coherent framework of explanation that makes sense of what is happening.

I know my GP surgery has facilities for complementary medicine to be used as well as or instead of conventional medicine.
