I quite agree. I am going to try and get work to get me one for my desk rather than the PCs I have now.

Besides I spend so much work time in Unix terminal sessions all I really need is a sane terminal client and appropriate fonts.

Not sure if they will go for it though on the grounds that my PowerBook is owned by the lab and I *could* just plug it into an external screen keyboard if I wanted to.

Oh - and leopard is the next release.

I tend to spend most of the day in PuTTY on unix sessions, but it seems not to support any speech output, although in most other ways it's wonderful.

Do you know of any other SSH client s/w that will allow me to point at a bit of screen and have it read to me? I could get back to work sooner if I can find some!

I have to be honest and admit that I don't have a clue about other clients as I use either putty or Exceed - neither of which is going to read the screen out.

You could try acquiring a copy of JAWS which a blind friend of mine uses - whether that can read a putty screen I have no idea - but it does manage to read out every windows dialog box out to her - which is really annoying if she isnt using headphones for everyone else!

the problem is that they quicly tire of the Universal Access features of my Mac and TURN THEM OFF!

I'm hoping that the advent of Leopard will let me lock the UA settings.

All the best with your buy-Paul-a-Mac campaign. If it were me, I'd let you have an Apple Mac, and insist that the rest of the department got one too.

Why do you need to wait for Leopard? Just create another user account for them to use, then they won't even have access to your settings (not to mention your files). Universal Access settings are user specific - so you can have it switched off for the "guest" account.

Enable Fast User Switching and you won't even have to log out if you are in the middle of something when they ask to use your computer for a few mins.

Just a regular user should do, although you can give them a limited account if you prefer. (Please tell me they're not using your admin account?!)

Well I at least am in luck there with my PB, as no one wants to borrow it!

Mac users in my dept are considered a very strange bunch and I am considered the oddest of all as I use a variety of platforms platforms (Mac, Windows and various Unixes).

Of course it sounds even wierder when I tell you that I work in a University Computer Science Dept.

Oh I did the buy-Paul-a-mac thing last year and managed to acquire a well specced eMac for home and a 15" PowerBook.

Extracting a PowerMac or an iMac is not going to happen somehow.

So I will have to use the PB at work with extermal monitor if I want to use a Mac on my desk, either that or take the eMac into work.
