Louise
I was a student. Just before term exams toothache struck. I made my way to the Campus Dentist and just as he advanced towards me with one of those instruments in his hand he asked me
"Have you been to see Marathon Man?"
I nearly jumped out of the chair!
The instrument he was holding turned out to be a hypo and he gave me ample anaesthesia before sparking up his drill.
As to whether we can choose the type of anaesthesia we have for ophthalmological sugery: of course we can. Its just that the ophthamologist may not be too strident in bringing the choice to our attention!

That's very true Andrew, we tend to think of these things afterwards or we think it but don't say it. With one of my grafts, the doc put his hand on my knee and said sweetly, 'now tell me, how does your Schizophrenia affect you?' and I was so tempted to say, 'you want a practical demonstration?' but I didn't think he would handle it!
